Overview:
As part of this unit, you need to identify a research topic that you are interested in potentially researching. All your courses will require some form of individual research. This is usually undertaken in your second year, when you have developed a deeper understanding of core content, and have found a niche interest to explore further. The research project you propose in this unit can be purely hypothetical, or you could take the opportunity to explore a topic that you would hope to research in the future. You must seek approval for your topic BEFORE submitting either the annotated bibliography or the research proposal (see the link on the Assessment pages on vUWS). You will not be able to access the submission portal without having had your topic approved. Further information about coming up with a research topic and question will be given on the Module 1 and Assessment 3 pages on vUWS. It will also be a focus of discussion in Workshop 1.
To complete this assignment, students will develop a research proposal that describe a plan for a specific research project based on readings, workshop discussions and the work they have done throughout the semester focusing on a research question. It is required that the proposal must me contextualised to a specific research topic/question that could be researched. Students are expected to clearly explain what they are planning to research, to describe why they want to research their chosen topic/question and to provide an overview of the anticipated outcome of their
research proposal.

The general structure of the required proposal is:
– Introduction of the research topic
– Research question / thesis statement
– Justification for the proposed research (i.e. why is it important)
– Research aims and objectives
– Preliminary Literature Review which focuses on existing research (informed by the work done for your annotated bibliography)
– Theoretical Framework to be used (an outline and justification for the philosophical framework and research design that you will use to investigate your topic)
– Consider any ethical issues relevant to your research.
– Bibliography (list of relevant references used to prepare the proposal

Title: WHAT ARE THE IMPACTS ON WOMEN’S WELL-BEING ARISING FROM GENDER DISCRIMINATION IN THE WORKPLACE?

Introduction to the Research topic

Workplace equality is still a striving and common issue at workplaces all over the world, even in developed countries. Gender equality is a factor, the absence of which creates dissatisfaction in the form of gender discrimination (Falk, & Hermle, 2018). Gender equality in this concurrent age is to be regarded as something more than simply ‘women’s rights’ (Griffin, 2016). It is imperative that business leaders and organisations focus on learning the facts about gender discrimination, act for its prevention in order to avoid consequential outcomes (Catherine Verniers, & Jorge Vala. 2018). According to Verma (2017), it has been evident that women who are subject to gender discrimination at work suffer from a number of mental or psychological issues. Furthermore, there has been evidence suggesting that enhanced workplace conflict is common upon facing gender discrimination (Andrews et al., 2018). Being harassed based on one’s gender develops psychological issues, which in turn are known to cause major issues in the physical, mental, emotional as well as the social well-being of women (Pennington et al., 2018). As illustrated in Figure 1, only one-third of the population participated in a survey stated that the workplace was balanced with respect to gender (Pewresearch.org, 2018).

Research question/thesis statement

The thesis statement is:

“The impact on the well-being of women due to gender discrimination at workplaces." 

The research questions formulated for this project are:

  1. What are the psychological effects on women’s well-being due to workplace gender discrimination?
  2. What are the consequences of gender discrimination on the social, mental and physical well-being of women?
  3. What are the factors involved in facilitating gender discrimination at workplaces?

Research aims and objectives

The research aim is to be able to identify the extent to which the well-being of women employees is affected as a result of gender discrimination at their place of work. 

The objectives of the research are:

  • To identify the psychological effects on women’s well-being due to workplace gender discrimination
  • To evaluate the consequences of gender discrimination on the social, mental and physical well-being of women
  • To investigate the factors involved in facilitating gender discrimination at workplaces

Justification and Contribution of the proposed research

This proposed research may aid in providing an insight of organisations and business leaders to identify the existing issues and develop adequate plans for the mitigation of the same. Additionally, the proposed research may continue developing strategies and plans for further investigation and research regarding the role that gender discrimination plays in the daily life of women. 

Preliminary Literature Review

The first journal that has been selected for the research is on the topic of justifying gender discrimination in the workplace. As influenced by the idea of Verniers & Vala (2018), it can be said that historical myths are considered as the barrier to the career of the women. In addition to this, it can be said that according to the view of the author if the women continue pursuing the career of their dreams then it will be a problem to their families and the family will be threatened. The findings of the journal show that the family policies are used disproportionally for the females rather than for the males. The second journal that has been selected is based on how men and women face challenges in the workplace. As stated by Iyer & Ryan (2009), it can be said that this study focuses on two different groups and these status groups and the identification of the groups for determining the gender discrimination in the workplace. As influenced by the idea of Iyer & Ryan (2009), it can be said that the finding s of this study shows that there is a number of women in higher identifiers perceiving the glass cliff than in the lower cliffs. Workplace violence and gender discrimination are the next journals. As opined by Newman et al. (2011), it can be said that findings of this study showed that people in the lower group experienced more inequalities than the people in the higher groups and they consider themselves as an individual. Next article was on the topic of the discrimination of women and harassment of women in the workplace. This study investigated a survey of twenty-five different countries for identifying various type of discrimination in the workplace. As influenced by the idea of Bader et al. (2018), it can be said that findings of this journals suggest that in most of the countries females had to suffer more discrimination which leads to low productivity in the workplace. The fifth journals were on workplace incivility towards women. As opined by Chui & Dietz (2014), this journal suggests that the uncivil behaviours to the women in the workplace are also responsible for low productivity in the workplace. The next journal was on the topic of gender discrimination at the workplace of the mentally retarded adults. As influenced by the idea of Julius, Wolfson& Yalon-Chamovitz (2003), it can be said that the findings of this study show that men and women receive the same treatment for their state of mind, but in the workplace, women receive fewer facilities than the men. Next journal is the journal on tackling discrimination in the workplace. As influenced by the idea of Soutphommasane (2013), it can be said that racism is faced mostly Australia and the findings also suggest that there is a number of unemployed indigenous people in Australia rather than the native people. As stated by Kim (2018), it can be said that the journal on the effect of gender discrimination successfully found that there are many effects of gender inequality on the lives of women. The wellbeing of the women is treated unequally, and this effects negatively the productivity of the organization. The second last journal was on the topic of experience of discrimination of physician's mother in the workplace. As influenced by the idea of Halleyet al. (2018), it can be said that the findings of the study show that they have experienced a lot of sexual harassment and maternal discrimination due to the gap in the role of leadership. It can be said that the journal on workplace sex discrimination found that the men and the women in the majority group are less likely to face racial discrimination. This study also found that minority groups are still facing the problem of racial discrimination. 

Theoretical Framework to be used

6.1 Epistemological position

As influenced by the idea of AI &Whitcomb (2011), it can be said that this research has all the focus on the definition of gender inequality and feminism. There will be focus on the various types of feminist epistemologies methods and methodologies. Furthermore, the research will be clearly elaborative about the tackling issues of discrimination in the workplace. In reference to the context of Alasuutari, Bickman & Brannen (2008), it can be said that topic of the research is entirely based on the gender inequality in the workplace and the ways for tackling such problems in the workplace, and therefore, it can be said that this research will not be based on only one epistemology. As inferred from the context of AI &Whitcomb (2011), it can be said that in fact, there will be focus on both positivist and post-positivism

6.2 Theoretical perspective

Research Philosophy

As research philosophy is involved with nature, source and development of knowledge, it is an integral part of any research project. The research philosophy is the reflection of the author's assumptions that determine the research strategy (Walter & Walter, 2013). For this research project, a positivism research philosophy will be pursued to make the research data highly structured and measure it either quantitatively or qualitatively or a mixture of both. The positivism theory of research philosophy would help to make the research more profound and accurate in terms of collecting primary data.

Research Approach

Based on the type of data collected for the project, the research approach should be selected. It can vary from the inductive, deductive and abductive approach (Verma 2017). As the data collected in the project is mainly the primary source of data from a survey questionnaire, the deductive research approach will be used to determine the true premises for the research which would result in concluding the research result to be true also. A deductive approach would also help to either falsify or verify the theories identified in the project.

6.3 Methodology

As influenced by the idea of Verma (2017), it can be said that for determining gender inequality or gender discrimination, quantitative analysis has been chosen as the method of choice. In addition to this, it can be said that as the groups of the study were predefined, so it was very easier to collect the information from them by using the quantitative methodology. As influenced by the idea of Walter & Walter (2013), it can be said that the quantitative data are used as it always help in obtaining data from the potential and the existing groups. 

6.4 Research design

The data collection process for the research has been chosen as a survey questionnaire which would consist of 10 close-ended questions which the participants can provide based on their own understanding. This survey is useful in collecting primary data from people involved with the research topic. With the use of a positivism philosophy and deductive approach, the collected data will be quantitatively analysed to present an accurate and statistical representation of the data (Verma, 2017). Such quantitative data analysis of the collected data is useful in analysing it more accurately from a specified sample size chosen for the project survey. The questionnaire of the survey will be quantitatively analysed to produce a graphical representation of the participant's answers and determine the popular perspective on the research topic.

Research Methods

7.1 Participant selection

In reference to the context of Mertens & Ginsberg (2009), it can be said that surveying for this research paper several questions are proposed to be asked to the predefined groups and these questions to be distributed to the groups of people by the help of the digital media. As influenced by the idea of many researchers and scientist, it can be said that many steps can be followed for making the survey of this research successful. In addition to this, it is also proposed that the survey question that was made for the predefined groups should be in accordance with the following characteristics and the characteristics are a collection of data, fundamental levels of measurements, utilisation of different types of the question that are to be asked. As stated by Silverman (2011), it was also observed for getting the correct type of answers the survey question was given with multiple choice answers, and this would make it easier for the participants to choose answers properly.

7.2 Methods to gather data

In reference to the context of Curtis& Curtis (2011), it can be said that the methods to be used in this research are the survey and quantitative data analysis. In addition to this, it can be said that survey is done for gaining information and collecting data from the groups that are predefined for having in-depth knowledge about the research topic that is gender discrimination or gender inequality at the workplace. As opined by Moon, & Blackman (2014), it can be said that a survey in the research depends on the type of methodologies used. 

7.3 Methods to analyse data

In this quantitative research, analysis is proposed for determining the facts about the issues of gender inequality in the workplace. As influenced by the idea of Mason & Dale (2011), it can be said that the data used after the surveying the predefined groups are obtained only within the standardized method. 

Ethical issues relevant to research

Since this research primarily focuses on the well-being of women due to workplace gender discrimination, it is also important to consider the point of view of male employees as well (Davis, 2010). Additionally, it is important to ensure the anonymity of individuals participating in the research, as it may further facilitate biased behaviour at workplaces (Alasuutari & Fisher 2008). Lastly, it is to be ensured that the research is reasonable and grounded, and the information is genuine, as well as the research is not biased towards any community.
