Topic: Business Culture Essay
Full task details: Mary, from Dubbo, always knew that she would have a career with food, her parents are chefs and continuously experiment with new recipes for sauces and condiments and bottling them as gifts. Growing up in this food loving environment led Mary to start a small business manufacturing a variety of condiments; chilli sauces, pastes, chutneys and jams. Today she owns ‘The Aroma Shop’ and an attached small factory. Her products use organic ingredients, no preservatives and are very popular. Mary wishes to expand her business to Japan as she is certain that her products will sell well there! Mary intends to fly to Tokyo to meet the manager of a popular store, 55-year-old Mr. Moro. Mary isn’t certain how to correctly conduct business in the Japanese culture and with an older man. She is concerned about their first meeting.
You are required to provide a 1500-word formal analytical essay. Using a minimum of five scholarly references that have been written in the last five years and are credible and reliable, you are to discuss the following in detail with references:
1. Japanese business etiquette and the steps that Mary can take to make a favourable first impression when she visits Japan and meets Mr. Moro.
2. A section on areas of potential cross-cultural miscommunication, using either Hofstede or the GLOBE Models of Culture.
3. Suggest suitable things that Mary can do to increase the success of the meeting and future business arrangements.

Assessment 1: Individual Cultural Essay
Marry lives in the countryside. From childhood, she is fond of cooking, and she wanted to make her career with food. Mary's parents are chief. She always loved to cook various dishes. She experimented in her cooking repeatedly, and she always cooked new recipes with sauce, salt, mustard and pickle to add a good flavour on the recipe and after cooking she packed the recipes in the bottle and gifted her parents. Mary loved her profession, and that's why Mary has started a small manufacturing business where the different condiments such as sauces, pastes, jam these ingredients are produced. Now Mary opens an aroma shop and also makes a factory adjacent to it. The products which are produced in this factory used as organic ingredients products in the market. Mary does not use any substance to preserve foods to safe from decay. It is not a healthy process for any kind of food.
Mary wants to expand her business in Japan. Because she is confident that her products will be sold in the Japanese market. But she does not what steps are required to start a business and what plans are necessary to start a business. That's why Mary wants to meet the manager of a food store in Tokyo. The name of the manager is Mr Moro. He is an owner of the popular store. Mary has to maintain some formalities with Mr Moro when she will talk with Mr Moro about her businesses. It is very important for Mary to give a good introduction to Mr Moro. It will make a good impression of Mr Moro about Mary.Mary will not make eye contact with Mr Moro. The main things of Japanese culture that bowing is essential for the guests in Japan (Dunn, 2018). Mary should be bowing down to Mr Moro instead of the handshake. Mary should avoid putting her hands into the pocket while talking with Mr Moro to maintain formal introduction. There is another protocol in Japanese business is exchanging business cards. Mary will show her business card to Mr Moro. That showing of the business card will speak how much Mary intended to conduct her business. Also when receiving the business card bowing is the must. After receiving the card from Mr Moro, Mary will not cram the card into the pocket. Keep that card on the table until the meeting is end (Rothlin and McCann, 2016). Before starting the meeting, Mary has to remove her shoes. This will make a good impression on Mr Moro. Mary has to avoid pointing out her figure to anyone (Cook and Shibamoto-Smith, 2018). If Mary receives a gift from Mr Moro, she must be thankful to him and put that gift side on the table. If Mary will be invited to drink, then she will definitely accept this offer. Mary has to avoid large gesture, and large laughter and unusual the expression of face and Mary will avoid wearing a black suit and white shirt. She must wear a dark navy and charcoal grey (Takeda et al., 2017).
54% of the society of Japan is hierarchical. The collective society of Japan describes the different culture of society. Japanese are always aware about their rank in businesses. According to the experiences of many foreigners, the decision-making process in Japan is very slow (Lee and Herold, 2016). Any persons in a high-level position in any company in Japan cannot take any decision in that hierarchical society. This degree provides the difference in acceptance to the member unequally, and inequality has been noticed in higher power distance society. Whereas in low power distance society every person should be treated equally. So Mary has to maintain her activities and planning and also her decision in her business and should have to provide respect to the Mr.Moro according to their rank to get the meeting and business successful.
In Japan, 46% live in individual society. Also, there is now showing much collective society. This dimension the member of a company describes him/herself as a whole team. This individualism shows the independent characteristics of persons in Japan.in comparison to the collective community members have viewed him as connected to other persons (Braud et al., 2017). So Mary has to maintain the activities in these both societies that she cannot face any problem in her business and should have to show loyalty in the business.
Masculinity is another important degree in which roles are vital in this model. In this model, men are too preferred more in many activities in the country Japan compare to women. Men in Japan are assertive, competitive characteristic. While women in Japan are very gentle.so in any workplace in the masculine society success of material rate is very important. In Japan 95% masculine (Kikukawa et al., 2017). Mary has to maintain his activities very well and carefully in masculine society in Japan that she grows up her business without any hurdles. This could be better to include more men in their business to avoid miscommunication in the cross-cultural aspect.
Uncertainty is the final degree in the Hofstede model. This dimension provides the manner which always gives uncertainty to the people in society. There has been much uncertainties shown in the society which may be threats to the people (Bhakta et al., 2016). This should be avoided by the law and legal way. There are some rules that needed to tolerate the ambiguity. In the workplace or in company members in the high uncertainty society reduces the ambiguous situation by investing in technology define the rules very implicitly, and reducing the uncertainty in good planning. But in comparison to the lower uncertainty society, the people from the less formal structure and in workplace employees can easily change the other employers in the company (Lee and Herold, 2016). But the loyalty of the company does not depend on it. So Mary will carefully observe this Hofstede model and the musculature communication of Japan. Mary also needs to do a feasibility analysis and proper evaluation of the market before starting their business. She has to be accustomed to this culture and Mary has to understand the people of different societies, also their demands, the rules and regulation of these societies. Hence Mary will start his food business properly in Japan.

In Japan, several food producers produced harmful foods which infected poisons to the people health. Till today various food scandals have been reported in japan which makes the people more aware about the Mary uses his recipes with sauces, salts and jam with these condiments. These kinds of foods will attract the customer in that locality in Japan where Mary will start her business or open a food store. With the products like chilli sauces, condiments, pastes, chutneys and jams. These recipes will make preferable mostly to college students and many youth people. It will help definitely to make the profit in Mary's business. Also, Mary will try to use organic products in her business because this will not harm or damage the health of the public. Mary should have to convince Mr Moro about the less use of pesticide products in her business and hence she will make a profitable business in Japan. Beside this Mary should have to show her strategy to Mr Moro so that if he helps Mary then what profit he will get to get the business run in the Japanese market.
From the above description, it can be said that Mary should have to maintain a few business etiquettes of Japan to make her first impression positive. Not only that, but the Hofstede cultural model also describes the proper cross-cultural communication while few strategies are also described here for Mary to make her meeting and business success in the Japanese market.
