Describe the scope, characteristics and diversity of the tourism, hospitality and events industries and how they interplay. Recognise the various career paths within the tourism, hospitality, and events industries and construct a career plan that enhances employability.

Context:

Beginning your career in the tourism, hospitality & events industries can be a daunting process as you may have an ideal role in mind but be unsure about how to get there. A professional development plan is a tool that enables students to identify the steps and actions required to progress through their career journey towards their ultimate career objective. In addition, this plan helps student to identify their existing skills and knowledge, as well as learning & development activities to acquire new skills and knowledge that will help them advance their career. Completing a self-evaluation tool such as Clifton Strengths Finder Assessment (also known as Gallup Strengths) can help students to gain a greater understanding of their individual strengths and how to use these strengths to expedite their career aspirations. It is recommended that the professional development planning process should be undertaken initially by the student in this subject, followed by a discussion with their allocated Success Coach.

Instructions:

Students are required to complete a professional development plan in which they consider their potential career journey, using the template provided. Prior to this, students should complete the Clifton Strengths Finder Assessment (also known as Gallup Strengths) to identify their top five individual strengths. Within the plan students should outline the following:

An overall career objective – the position they would eventually like to hold and the type of organisation. This objective should be written using the SMART goal principles (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant & timely). • At least five (5) career path milestones that the student believes they will need to achieve to progress towards their overall career objective. These can be related to education, training, employment, personal growth, etc. • At least three (3) learning and development activities that could be undertaken to assist in achieving each milestone. • Students will need to consider which of their Clifton Strengths will best assist them in achieving each milestone and how they will use their strengths in combination to do so. Students must link each of their top five strengths to at least one milestone. • A date/time period by which they aim to achieve each of their milestones. Once they have completed the template, students are required to create a visual representation/illustration of their potential career path to help them to envision their journey. This should provide detail on the following: • The student’s overall career objective and top five Clifton Strengths. • At least five (5) job roles that the student could be employed in to help them progress towards their overall career objective. o A brief description of the responsibilities of each job role. o Two (2) skills that the student could develop in each job role. • A brief overview of three (3) organisation that could be potential employers and a justification of how these organisations could assist in achieving the career path milestones. • In-text referencing is not required, however a reference list of sources of information should be provided in the form of a separate document.

Career objective and top five Clifton Strengths. 

My overall career objectives are to make use of my strengths and skills for the purpose of improving career progression and dealing with the development of a fulfilling work and personal life balance. 

The development of the effective top five Clifton Strengths is associated with the provisions of the following points. First, the strength is related to the process in which there would be futuristic qualities. This would be necessary for the purpose of dealing with the right kind of management of focus and attention on proper management of vision and clarity of work roles. It would provide skills which are related to the foresight and visions for the future would be necessary for the development of the future oriented preparations and skills oriented for the needs of future changes. 

Second, there would be skills which are related to the process in which relationship skills would be developed. Such kind of skills would be associated with the provisions managing the relationships of the people. It would be necessary for the purpose of ensuring that there would be right kind of management of the skills which are related to the relationship management within the operations. In terms of handling and managing operations in a team driven environment, such kind of skills would be crucial for the management of the work roles. There would be provisions of the investment into proper relationship management which would be necessary for the purpose of allowing the long-term growth of the qualities which are related to the handling of the skills associated with the genuine nature of the people. This would be aiding in the growth of proper networking abilities as well to get work done and ensure that there would be effective means of handling the details of the work roles. 

Third, there would be strengths which are related to Focus nature. This would be working for the purpose of dealing with the process of engaging the work roles associated with the setting specific goals and dealing with the process of achieving them. This would be necessary for the purpose of dealing with the goal-oriented approach. Such kind of skills would be crucial for the purpose of improving the quality of operations while dealing with obstacles and delays. The challenges management skills would be properly handled and managed within the scope of the work norms. 

Fourth strength would be related to the Competition skills. Such kind of skills are crucial for the purpose of equipping people with the norms which are related to managing proper targets and outperforming the given standards. This would be necessary for the purpose of dealing with the challenges which are found within the overall work systems which are related to the long-term management of the effective work roles which are related to target management. There would be winning nature and ability to take up challenges to tackle with difficult conditions for the purpose of long-term management of the work systems. 

Fifth there would be strengths which are related to the growth of the Deliberative nature. This kind of skill would be necessary for the purpose of dealing with the management of the effective means of managing risks with a calm nature. This would be crucial for the purpose of dealing with the dynamic nature of the work systems and create effective means of dealing with the right kind of management of the work operations. There would be ability to carefully weigh all options for the purpose of dealing with the skills of the people. This would be crucial for the purpose of managing the work norms and ensure that there would be right kind of handling of the work operations. 

Job roles and required responsibilities and skills

On the basis of assessment of the strengths and overall work focus, I would like to take the following 5 job roles. All such kind of job roles would be having presence of following skill needs and managing the attention to the work conditions within the operations of employer. 

First, I would like to work as a team leader within the operations of my current employer i.e. Hyatt Regency. This would be necessary for the purpose of dealing with my immediate targets and create means for the purpose of managing the work systems for career progression. The role of team leader would be crucial for the purpose of allowing the growth of the effective means of two responsibilities. First, I would have to be leading and guiding a team of around 20 employees with specific job roles which are assigned. Second, there would be need for the people management skills which are related to the process of engaging the needs of the employees. This would have to be managed within the overall objectives of the organization. 

The skills in the position of team leader would be associated with effective communication within the team members. Effective communication would be necessary for the porpoise of coordinating the roles of the different team members and making individual employees aware of their roles. Further, there would be need for proper planning skills in order to have properly scheduling work norms and different tasks. 

Second role which I would like to take up would be related to Front Office position. I am interested in such kind of work role because if the challenging work nature in terms of directly dealing with queries and needs of the customers. As such, the key responsibilities in such kind of role would be related to properly managing customer queries. There would be need for the engagement of the work operations for the resolutions of the customer queries and requests. 

The key skills would be related to the process in which conflict management skills would be quite high. As I would dealing with issues faced by customers, there would be need for the management of skills which would be useful for handling conflicts effectively. Secondly, there would be need for the management of skills related to objectivity in decision making process. Managing straightforward work skills and style of operations would be crucial for the purpose of allowing the long-term management of the customer handling skills in Front Office Position. 

Third, I would look forward to work in Human Resource position. This kind of position would provide me with the chance to shoulder the responsibilities associated with engaging the employees and their needs. Second, there would be responsibility of ensuring that the recruitment, selection and staffing needs of the organization would be properly managed. 

During the course of managing such kind of role, I would pick skills related to proper management ethics which are in line with the organizational culture. Second, there would provisions for the management of skills which are related to the process in which motivation of people would be handled. This would be crucial for the purpose of engaging the work systems of managing people within the organization. 

Fourth, the role of Supervisor in Event department would be a desirable option. This would call for the presence of two key responsibilities. First, there would be need for the scheduling of the different people and resources to complete specific events in line with the needs of the customers. Second, as an event department manager, I would have to carry out the responsibilities of controlling costs while completing the orders and requests of the customers. 

In such kind of position, there would be development of skills related to proper delegation abilities. Delegation abilities would be necessary to conduct intricate work operations in a coordinated manner. It would also allow me to deal with resource partners and different vendors. Second, I would develop skills which are related to problem solving skills which are related to finding skills to always look for fresh perspective while dealing with complex challenges. 

Fifth, I would like to work in the role of manager of banquet. This would be attached with the responsibilities associated with the managing proper budgets. Second, there would be need for the management of effective marketing operations as well to get new customers. 

The key skills that can be developed would be related to the purpose of having effective discipline and strategic planning abilities. This would be possible on the basis of work systems associated with dynamic nature of work in handling banquets. Second, I am likely to develop the skills which are related to creativity which would be used for the purpose of properly dealing with the marketing of the banquet. 

Potential employers

Three potential employers would be Hyatt Regency, Hilton Group and Radisson Blu. All these employers are having significant presence and operations in Australia for the purpose of managing the quality of operations for the customers. 

These companies would be able to provide career path milestones in terms of providing proper career paths and ensure that there would be effective means of dealing with the long-term management of the operations. Such kind of employers would be offering large scale operations, stable compensation policies, effective career progression norms and effective organizational culture would be suitable for career enhancement.
