There are wide ranges of application of communication. For instance, a mother is talking to her son on the phone. The boy expresses his feelings to his mother and additionally provides a perspective of the place he went to study.
The interaction acts as the most basic form of communication and also in this interaction both parties change their roles of sender and receiver of the information regularly.
Secondly, Other than the primary person to person interaction there are more subtle ways by which a person can communicate with another person. Non-verbal communication uses the medium of gestures and body language to express the message without the need of using words. This form of communication relates to a more intimate relationship between people.
The communication uses facial expressions, hand gestures and pitch of the voice as the instrument to convey a message (Leavitt, Keegan & Clark, 2016). They are mostly signals sent by individuals to one another to express their emotions rather than words.
For example, people nod their head up and down to say "yes" or emphasising in agreement with another person. Nodding the head sideways means "No" and this emphasises disagreement with another person. A shrug of the shoulders usually means that the person does not know about the information in the message. A “V” sign with the fingers of the hand signifies victory or accomplishment of a task. There are many other gestures which people use to interact non-verbally with other peoples.
However, the meanings of the gestures had to pre-configured and known before using it because sometimes using wrong gestures can communicate an entirely different message. For example, a shrug of the shoulders can also represent that the person is feeling sad. Non-verbal cues for communicating often leads to confusion and embarrassment.
Finally, Effective communication plays a vital role in the development of an individual's personality. It helps people to express themselves most suitably and credibly. People with excellent communication skills tend to have a superior and extraordinary personality as compared to people with the least communication skills (Ariani, 2015). The personality of individuals dictates their mindset and makes them confidence and projects them as competent. For example, a person working as a salesperson can efficiently sell more products if he has excellent communicatory skills and great personality. The communicatory skills will make the person believable in front of the customer, and the personality will project confidence in the products. Personality can, therefore, project the attitude of a person.
Listening is the key to effective communication. It is the ability of the individual to precisely receive the information and interpret it in the process of communication. The lack of ability results in misunderstanding and arguments between people if the message is not perceived correctly. Listening is considered as the top ability by many employers of reputed organisations required in a candidate during the hiring process (Pu & Park, 2016). However, mostly the listening is confused with hearing. Hearing refers to a noise that enters the person's ears while listening requires concentrated effort and focus. Listening is, therefore, a key feature in any form of communication and should be adhered to while sending a message or receiving it.
Receivers are not only the unreceptive absorbers of the information. People receive the messages, interpret them and respond to them accordingly; this is referred to as feedback. Sometimes feedback could be non-verbal and sometimes verbal. For example, a person reacts to a colleague's idea with questions and comments and sometimes while disagreeing with the idea from the start the person nods his head sideways. The later is a form of non-verbal feedback, and the former is a form of verbal feedback (McLarnon et al., 2017). Feedbacks are an essential part of the communication process and should present a focus on the sender of the message.
