The organisational management functions include prime key concepts that help to commence the business activities for achievement of goals. The study is based on the discussion over three major managerial concepts that is leadership, motivation, managing communication. The discussion includes information about the concepts approaches and relevant issues faced by the business organisation related to the organisational management functions.
2. Background of the management
Management or organisational management is stated as getting work done through efficiency and affectivity. In other words, the management is called as an organisational, administrative approach in which the efforts, abilities, and skills of workforces are directed towards meeting the goals and objectives of the entity. The management includes balanced working process and set of activities required to introduce in the workplace so that employees of an organisation could provide their full effort, focus, concentration and commitment (Adams, Smart & Huff, 2017). The organisational management includes several groups of approaches, collaborating the business entities regulates and operates its activities. Organisational management is all about getting work, and things are done through proper direction and supervision. The leadership here plays a great role in guiding, directing, and influencing the workforce for meeting the organisational objectives. A leader has behavioural approaches like desires of leading, mastering analytical skills to understand complied information, self-confidence, motivated, emotional stability, integrity and honesty. In the organisation, a leader requires to be self-driven, visionary and decision-maker (Ruben & Gigliotti, 2016). Leading a team is stated, as tough task as every individual has different behavioural approaches, beliefs and considerations. According to the path-goal theory, the leaders must have the ability to increase skills, abilities and satisfaction of its subordinates towards their work or task allocated. Primarily there are four leadership styles, directive, supportive, participative and achievement pointed leaders. The leadership issues are observed while there is lack of coordination and cooperation between the leaders and their followers (Werner et al. 2016). The lack of communication increases the leadership issues for an individual in an organisation.
The motivation is another managerial concept; it is stated as a force, which drives an individual or employee to work towards their allocated job. The motivation is described as a drive that increases an employee’s focus, direction, commitment and efforts to accomplish workplace goals or targets provided. The direction, initiation and persistence together are called as motivation. According to the Maslow's hierarchical needs, an employee looks for while joining an organisation five elements (Morgan & Rayner, 2019). This means these five elements create satisfaction and boosts the motivation of an employee to stick with an organisation for a long run. The self-actualisation needs, esteem needs, belongingness needs, safety and security needs and psychological needs. Along with the satisfaction needs, the remuneration, salaries, rewards, recognitions, promotions boosts the motivational factor of an employee in the organisation. In case of motivation, the issue rises while there is a lack of coordination, unfair distribution of rewards and lack of support from the management arises. The expectancy theory explains that peoples in the organisation believe a good effort brings positive results and positive results bring rewards and recognitions (Hitka, Kozubíková & Potkány, 2018). However, the unexpected or poor returns over the employee contribution break the motivational aspects within the employees.
Communication is the process of transferring information or sharing information from one person to another. The communication creates relationship, coordination and cooperation with internal and external stakeholders of the business. The managers of an organisation use the strategic approach of managing communication in their 80% of the working day. Managing and maintaining a relationship is one-off the biggest issues of an organisation. Thus, they face internal and external communication challenges. As per the attribution theory, the peoples in an organisation require to understand and explain the reasons for changes in the behavioural approaches of other persons (Koschmann & Campbell, 2019). For this, there is a requirement of a strong communication process. The formal, informal, coaching and non-verbal communication are different types of interaction and sharing information within one another in the organisation. The issues arise in the communication process while there are too much information is shared within the workplace. It becomes complex for the employees to extract and understand each communication. Thus, it creates a certain work pressure within the employees. On the other hand, the upward issues of communication are lack of authority to communicate with the higher management levels. The gap of communication rises while there is an improper flow of information exists within three deferent levels of management in the organisation.
3. Management topics and issues 3.1 Leadership and issues: Uber Inc
The leadership styles and approaches applied and used by different business entrepreneurs in regards to making a successful leading, directing decision making and guiding the employees towards the organisational goals. The leaders create a strong relationship with their followers. These leaders are more visionary; respect organisational values motivate the team members and communicate high-end performances from its team members. However, leaders manipulate their followers, make favouritism, self-interest motivated usually ends up to breaking the employee-employer relationships. According to the trait theory, every individual in the world has some leadership qualities and skills within them. The theory state that every individual has some characteristics traits, behavioural approaches, skills or abilities from their birth which could be mastered to direct, guide and manage a team in an organisation (Ruben & Gigliotti, 2016). Every leadership styles and approaches as their won way of making things in line and increase efficiency of the workforce. However, leadership issues rises while the unethical practices and self-interests become one of the traits within the leader's behavioural approach.
Uber Inc has been stated as one of the richest start-up companies in the global marketplace. The unique concept of online cab options for the customers has increased its favouritism in the market. The company has faced some leadership and cultural issues in the past few years. The company has gone through a controversial gig economy. The company has witnessed's unethical practices such as sexual harassments; evade the policies of the company, which prohibits the company from involving in any illegal practices (BBC 2019). The company has also been accused of stealing the intellectual property of Google. The CEO of the company has been stated as an abrasive leader; the toxic leadership patterns have been applied by the organisation, which also included bullying. There has been a lack of participatory or democratic decision-making rather focused on centralised leadership decision making, which has reduced the communication process within the employees (BBC 2019). As per the recommended solution, there might be a requirement of hierarchical structure to be followed by Uber. This might help the managers to above their won specific targets, which commonly relates to the organisational goals. The implementation of the hierarchical structure and democratic leadership styles, the managers might be able to increase coordination and cooperation within the workplace.
3.2 Managing communication issues: Starbucks
The communication management includes a systematic process of sharing or transferring information or message from one person to another. The improper communication is raised when the sender is unclear about what information or message to be shared or transferred. In addition, when the message is not a properly clear or wrong channel of communication is selected, it breaks the flow of communication within the workplace (Ocasio, Laamanen & Vaara, 2018). In an organisation, most of the cases, the non-verbal and formal communication process is used while there is an interaction between superiors and subordinates. In the case of colleagues, the employees are able to select their own way of communication types for transferring or sharing information. In the era technologies, electronic mail has become one of the common and most used sources of communication within the workplace. These days, the management finds issue establishing proper communication with the internal and external stakeholders due to lack understanding of their interests and expectations.
In the case of Starbucks, the management and communication crises have been witnessed in the past year. Starbucks has been stated as one of the best favourite places for business meetings and casual meetings. One day, two black men entered in the store of Starbucks. They did not make any orders until their friend showed up (Forbes, 2019). Soon, after when no one showed up, the manager comes and asks those two customers to leave the shop. When they disagree with the manager's approach, the manager called the police and gets those two men arrested. The later been realised without any charges. It has been stated that the company stated that there is poor communication and public relationship has been maintained in the Starbuck. There might be a requirement of proper training and development of the managers about handling and communicating with the customers. The increase in awareness and information about different ways of the communication might help the managers to understand the customer's needs and requirement and act according to it. The flow of communication might be enhanced by introducing an informal or casual communication approach. The casual communication increases customer relationship and embraces the public relations of the company in the marketplace.
3.3 Motivation and issues: British Airways
The motivation is a necessary element that boosts the employee’s performance, focus, contribution, commitment and productivity. As per the two-factor theory of motivation, the employees are motivated with hygiene factors and motivational factors. The hygiene factors include financial support, financial security, job security, company policies and statuses. In the motivational factors the rewards, recognitions, promotions increase he motivational aspects of an employee. The extrinsic rewards include good pay scale, job security and good financial benefits (Velten & Lashley, 2018). On the other hand, the intrinsic rewards include interesting work, interesting working environment, work culture, training and development of new skills. When these factors are absent, the motivational aspects of employees slowly decline and results in separation or poor performance of the workers.
Tesco Plc has been facing the issue of motivating new staff members; the company has admitted the fact that it is not able to generate motivation and boost the working progress of the employees under the age of 17-24. About 20000 employees of the company are under the age of 17-24, lacking the proper motivation to work for the company. The management of the origination has stated that there might be a requirement of training the managers of the entity to crease the process of motivating them (Peacock, 2019). It might be necessary to revise rewards and recognitions for this group of employees as generation Y has some other needs and expectations from the company. In addition to that, the employees facing lack of motivation might be communicated directly by the managers of the entity. The departmental head might make face-to-face conversation to learn about the issues, which are demotivating the workers in the company.
The leadership influences, directs, guides and manages the performance, skills and abilities of employees to meet the organisational goals. The motivation is stated as a driver that increases commitment and focus of the employees towards their job roles. The communication increase coordination cooperation and strong relationship within the workplace. The absence of any factors of these managerial concepts results in poor organisational performance in the market.
