ECE111 CURRICULUM 1 – PLAY AND PEDAGOGY ASSESSMENT TASK 3

Length: 2000 words (equivalent). Students should make references to a minimum of 6 sources of literature, using Harvard referencing style.

Weighting: 50%

Students will design a learning environment for children aged between birth and eight years. To be completed in groups of no more than three. Students should select a context for their environment, including but not limited to:

  • An early childhood centre for infants and toddlers
  • A sessional preschool
  • A Forest school
  • A play based primary school classroom
  • A Reggio Emilia inspired classroom

Students should discuss how the learning environment will inspire children to play and also facilitate their learning outcomes through play.

The purpose of this is task is to encourage teamwork and ongoing planning, where students are given the opportunity to work collaboratively to provide play spaces that complement each other and provide a holistic approach to curriculum planning. This task is split into two components (group work and individual work).

The whole group will:

  • Design the layout of the environment (indoor and outdoor)
  • Agree upon the play spaces within the learning environment
  • Write a 800 word statement that explains the philosophy and context of the centre

Each individual of the group will:

  • Design in detail one indoor play space and one outdoor play space
  • Submit a 1200-word reflection on their views and knowledge of what contributes to an effective learning environment for play and learning through play, with reference to the rationale for their chosen play space designs.

Part B Individual reflection and rationale (1200 words) (Individually marked)

 Step 5:

Design in detail two play spaces (1 indoor and 1 outdoor). In your design, consider:

  • The furniture
  • Materials Objects
  • Amount of space
  • The layout of the space and objects

Individually reflect upon your views and knowledge of what contributes to an effective play based learning environment, with consideration of how both play spaces:

  • Inspires play
  • Facilitates learning outcomes
  • Points to consider:

Collaborate from the beginning as to how and what each of you will contribute and allocate time to work together on this task. There will be a space set up in the CloudDeakin Discussion site for you to discuss your plans and share your thoughts.

Teachers never work in isolation, consider how your work ethic is contributing to an effectively functioning team.

Don’t forget….

Support your discussion with referenced, credible and up to date scholarly literature. You must follow the guidelines for the Harvard referencing style. The Harvard Style of referencing is used in the School of Education at Deakin, and it is expected that you will become familiar with it. Guidelines for the style can be found in the University’s Guide to assignment writing and referencing by following the link: http://www.deakin.edu.au/students/study-support/referencing

 indoor spaces and outdoor spaces

The elements of a learning environment are numerous and can be overpowering.  I have learned that the main aspects of learning for the children is based on the factors such as What should a good environment for children? How would you create environment that boost up learning and meets children fundamental needs? Environments for children ought to give numerous ways of stimulation to empower the improvement of physical, subject, enthusiastic, cognitive and social abilities (Susted.com., 2019). A whole room in indoor space is planned to fill in as the Exploratorium – a spot to play with numbers, science, nature, and music. We bring the outside inside by including live creatures and plants, and curios, pictures, books and materials for investigating science and nature. There are peaceful spaces where children can unwind with a book or tune in to music. There are spaces and materials for children to explore the specialty of playground.  This room includes a two-story space where children can see nature and the neighbouring study hall from alternate points of view. The space is created for exercise, consuming calories, and creating of huge engine abilities. There are huge froth building squares and enormous froth cushions and geometric shapes where children can make things to get on. There are protected climbing rocks on one divider (Hirose, Koda, and Minami, 2012). There is a move space where children can move and play with the beat of stimulating music. Generally, according to researcher indoors spaces only helps to children in the build-up mental growth but not effective in the physical development. Because through the indoors spaces a children mostly interact with toys which helps to build up their grades. They didn’t able to interact with environment that’s why they failed to find out the basic components of the nature. For the complete growth and development of the children they need both the spaces equally but generally outdoors play major role to develop the advance learning objective in the children (SAGE Journals., 2019).

design layout for children play

I learned that the particular feature and improvement of the outdoor environment gives variant play opportunity that cannot be recreate inside. The outdoor can be set out as an open and always showing continuous change of environment, where it is able to experience opportunity, self-sufficiency gross and active developments, and contact with basic elements. While playing outside, child profit by being presented to sunlight, basic natural components, and fresh air, which adds to bones growth, high in immune system or physical activity. The necessity to be physically active since the beginning is especially concerning with the development of children' obesity and overweight (Yıldırım, and Akamca, 2017). Additionally, play in green open fresh air environment stimulus larger amounts of consideration and well-being. Just like the indoor spaces, outdoor spaces must be composed for freedom and learning. I considered that children must probably effectively and easily access to equipment’s and materials. Outdoors, walkways, and stairs ought to be obviously checked and free of obstruction. It is essential to ensure motor skills play can happen securely in one territory without upsetting play in another region. For instance, a bike or skating way ought not to go directly through a region where child’s are drawing with chalk or playing hopscotch. You likewise need to isolate the tranquil exercises (craftsmanship, composing, and perusing) from the boisterous and dynamic exercises (ball play, bicycles, and running). Through outdoors play and the searching of basic components, it is able to promote educational learning in its broadest sense (Moghaddam, 2014).  I analyzed that Activities related to soil and water can fill in as example of learning opportunity in which ideas identified with Maths, science and language were stimulus in an interactive manner. As children are empty containers, a few times, they could investigate ideas identified with volume, weight, or time, and as they discussed what they were searching, new vocabulary was being gained. Comparative discoveries were found in different explores, appearing, for instance, child’s capacity to learn and utilize mathematics items or strategies amid outside play, utilizing their body as a learning mechanism. With the help of outdoors spaces we can check the motor skills and development of the body structure of the children. Outdoors a space helps children to build up   balance, sense of wellbeing, and basic elements of the nature (El-Aasar, Safy El-Deen, Shabaan, & Rezk, 2017).

Five active learning approaches through indoors and outdoors spaces-

Materials- A large supplies of open- ended materials that can be utilize in a various creative ways which helps to children to stimulate thinking and create a thoughts.

Manipulation- it will provide a great opportunity for children to carry, combine and transfer material and ideas to other on (Gray, and Martin, 2012).

Choice- The activities in indoors and outdoors gives a chance for children to choose the material and plan the activities according to their choice.

Stimulating language and thoughts- With the help of activities children interact with surroundings. They will able to describe to others what they are doing and their understanding of it (Rupiper, 2017).

I learned to know that as compared to indoors pays, children must have an opportunity to experience the moment of the failure and success and have a great chances of learning by trial and errors. Suppose if we remove all the obstacles and risky situation, than how children will deal with that unpredictable situation and environments. They don’t have a confidence to fight with the situation. For instance- when suddenly wild mushrooms start to grow in the garden, after a rainy season or children didn’t have any knowledge about that and children were running towards them to know the phenomena (Rasouli Valajoozi, & Zangi, 2016).  In that situation either we will be disallow to children from exploration and help children to understand the situation and teach them safest way possible. We look forward for the second option and told children that eating mushrooms is dangerous for them but if we avoid to go out than we will missed the opportunity to learn about situation and they didn’t get the sense of wellbeing (LIU, 2015). From the beginning childhood, basic education, and systematic education systems have a lot to offer one another. Learning environment reflect what we think about how differing children interact with their surroundings. Indoor and outdoor physical environments that provider a variety of settings for various learning opportunities best helps each child’s unique needs and difficulties. An instructional methodology must be made accessible to children. The spaces, in which children grow, learn and develop advance and provide a growing ways to deal with the education. Schools are open to all children and their families. Indoors and outdoors learning environment reflect and praise the local network in a several of agreeable ways. Perfect way to designing a physical space assumes an essential job in encouraging the development and keep of connections all through the local school network (Atkinson, 2011).  Indoor and outdoor spaces that are helpful for developing communication set the tone and send the message that becoming more to know with each other is important (Eadie, 2011). One space is shared by the children of the different ages for instances, scissors, painting material and small building blocks have to keep away on shelves out of the reach of the kids and toddlers. The youngest child may be provided with separate materials and spaces for their comfort.
