This assignment is a writing task that asks you to locate, summarise and evaluate five (5) full-text academic journal articles in the form of an annotated bibliography.

The articles must relate to the topic you have chosen for Assignment 2, as your annotated bibliography commences the research process for your Assignment 2 Essay.

What is an annotated bibliography?

An annotated bibliography provides a brief account of the available academic research on a given topic. It is a list of citations, with each followed by a short paragraph of around 150-160 words called the annotation. An annotation paragraph comments on the source cited, and includes both descriptive and evaluative writing. An annotated bibliography is a valuable writing task as it enables you to: familiarise yourself with material available on a given topic; demonstrate the breadth and depth of reading you have done; highlight sources that are useful and/or of interest to a reader; explore and organise sources as the first step in preparing for another assignment e.g. an essay or literature review.

What structure is required for your annotated bibliography?

Full reference of the text according to APA 6th edition as the prescribed referencing system.

An annotation in a paragraph below each reference. Include the following three areas of content per article:

Summary – reiterate the main points of the article. Ensure you identify the purpose of the article and the key finding/main argument of the article. You can also summarise the intended audience of the article and the research methodology used.

Evaluation – evaluate the article briefly. Consider strengths, weakness and/or notable features of the text. You can consider criteria such as reliability, significance and contribution to the topic field, methodology, use of evidence, writing style, and how the text is structured.

Statement of value – to what extent, and how, does the article inform the topic under investigation, with a particular emphasis on your Assessment 2 Essay?

What else do you need to follow for the structure of your annotated bibliography?

•List your annotations in alphabetical order using the first letter of the first author’s surname

•An introduction and conclusion is not needed for an annotated bibliography.

•A separate reference list is not required, as a full reference for each article is already presented.

•As you are referring to one article at a time, you do not need to reference any other additional sources in this assignment

•To discuss each article, you can refer to ‘the article’ or ‘the author/s’, or use correct APA 6th in-text referencing.

What style of writing should you use and how do you get started?

As you are writing an annotated bibliography on academic journal articles, the style of writing is academic. To get started, first locate and record citations to academic journal articles that may contain useful information and perspectives on your chosen topic. Briefly examine and review the actual items. Then choose those works that provide a variety of perspectives on your topic.

Following the citation for each article, an annotation is written in full sentences within a correctly formatted paragraph. You will need to be highly selective in the content you write to ensure you provide a full ‘snapshot’ of the article and its value for the topic under investigation
