Introduction
Task three is associated with identifying the teacher’s ability of managing the classroom effectively. In this session the major point that has been noticed is that the assigned teacher throughout the complete session used the names of the students. In this particular session it has been noted that the process of calling out the names of the students is important as it makes the students more comfortable especially when the complete session is invigilated by an outsider. In this study the effectiveness of classroom communication and management are to be evaluated with reference to the attended session.
Questions
1. HOW MUCH DID THE TEACHER ELICIT, HOW MUCH WAS EXPLAINED? HOW WAS ELICITING DONE?
The teacher was much interactive in the classroom and the questions that he asked were majorly elicited. The teacher prompted the students with the answers in several occasions. It is important to identify whether the prompting embarrassed the students or it had been done in such a manner that the students were encouraged. For example, it has been noted that the teacher himself gave the answer appropriately as the students were already aware of the used word, its meaning and the pronunciation of the word that was used. Importantly, it functioned as the revision of the previous lesson of using past simple in the sentences appropriately[1]. In the sessions majorly open ended questions had been used by the teacher in order to elicit the answers appropriately. Elicit was used in such a manner that the students do get embarrassed by the prompting of the teacher. If the students misspelled or mispronounced any particular verb form with ‘ed’ or ‘d’ in the end, the teacher asked them to look at the words again. The teacher also invoked the answers in the occasions that demanded prompting of the teacher. Elicit had been used prudently by the teacher in the occasions where it was necessary. |
2. WAS DRILLING USED DURING THE LESSON? WHAT WAS DRILLED? HOW EFFECTIVE WAS THIS?
The teacher did not used drilling in the session until the lesson almost came to an end. However, drilling session has proved to be much helpful for the students for effective learning of the new words that they are not acquainted with. When the teacher identified common errands regarding pronunciation of a particular word in the practise activities, the teacher drilled the word. For example when the teacher noticed that in the practice session one learner is pronounced a common word ‘help’ with unnecessary emphasize on the letter ‘l’ then the teacher drilled the word. Drilling proved to effective as the students pronounced the word correctly when the teacher drilled the word. In the course of the session it was noticed that the same mistake again started to happen in the lesson[2]. The teacher drilled the class using a different technique and the students were asked for individual effort as the teacher instructed them to pronounce the words individually. After individual pronunciation practice the learners could pronounce the word properly for the remainder of the session. The drill was used for similar occasion where the teacher felt the need of correcting the students’ pronunciation of the word ‘pizza’. For pronunciation of ‘zz’ in the word pizza the drilling was used in order to illustrate them, the pronunciation comes from within the mouth in a spontaneous manner and it was followed by an entire drilling of the word. The drilling process has proved to be significant for correcting the words which were subjected to more mistake regarding the pronunciation of the word[3]. |
FINAL SUMMARY
3. PLEASE REFLECT ON YOUR PROFESSIONAL EVALUATION OF THIS COMPONENT OF THIS COURSE. HOW HAS THE WRITING THIS JOURNAL AND REFLECTING ON YOUR OBSERVATIONS HELPED YOU IN YOUR OWN TEACHING PRACTICE?
The journal that has been written in association with this particular lesson helped me in understanding that it is important to have an inner critical insight for evaluating different teaching styles. It also helped me to understand effectiveness of several techniques that the teachers used in their classroom sessions. Writing the journal has helped me to understand the importance of this particular lesson in the course of the study. The program of guided observation has proved to be helpful in understanding the need for recognizing different techniques. I came across several methods of which I was not aware of. For instance, I never considered drilling as important in the learning activity[4]. However, watching the teacher effectively using the drilling process in the classroom and its productive outcome have helped me to potently recognize the importance of drilling process as an effective teaching tool. It helps the learners to rectify their mistakes and helps in successfully accomplishing the lesson aim. Writing this journal has also helped me in keeping account of the used methods and locate the techniques that have proved to be the most effective in meeting the learning needs of the students. It has also noticed that it important for a teacher to manage the classroom entirely and the importance rises in the presence of an outsider in the class at the time of the session. this lesson has helped to identify the factors that can be incorporated in teaching the students of different languages to make them feel comfortable in the classroom. Apart from that, the drilling technique and the eliciting can help the teacher to effectively train the students and I have also understood that elicit helps the students to memorize the past lessons. Inevitably the teacher has illustrated the effectiveness of elicit in revising the previously learned lesson[5]. According to me, it is an important technique for the teacher to revise the previous lessons without wasting much time from the current lesson as one of the major factor that is associated with classroom study is the time constraint. |
Conclusion
This lesson has been effective in meeting the moot need of understanding the necessary techniques that can be applied in the classroom teaching in order to help the students to learn in a more effective manner. Apart from that this lesson has also provided the scope of understanding and locating techniques of managing a class properly especially while invigilated by an outsider.
