Eportfolio On HR Management: Three Artefacts As Key Areas Of Focus

pages Pages: 4word Words: 890

Question :

You must create an e-portfolio which includes a minimum of 3 artefacts supporting your learning.

See guidelines on how to create an e-portfolio

Once the e-portfolio has been created, you must write a report reflecting on how the artefacts were chosen to illustrate your key strengths and potential to manage in the future. The written report must include a clear understanding of how you function as a manager, but more importantly how you like to be managed by others.

You are reflecting on your learning on this subject so your writing will include some personal ‘I’ statements. However, you will also include research in your report. This means you will refer to evidence to support any statements you make and you will also write more formally. For example:

Brown’s study (2016) reported that managers must be aware of their personal bias when hiring new employees. From this study, I learnt that, as a manager, I need to question my hiring decisions to make sure I employ a diverse range of people

Note: the e-portfolio created on Canvas will not be graded. You can continue to update this e-portfolio as you progress through university.

You will receive 10% of the grade for this assignment by completing two artefacts:

  1.  Emotional Intelligence micro-credential
  2.  Creating/updating your LinkedIn profile to include in your report.

The written reflection will be graded on Canvas.

Refer to the marking rubric for the written reflection under the Assignment Task 3 tab on Canvas.

Step 1: Provide a short personal statement of yourself

Start the reflection by providing a short bio of yourself. Highlight what you are currently doing, any work or other professional experiences, your values, and what you hope to do in the future.

While this bio is important for the reflection, it will also give you the skills to write about yourself in a professional manner. You will be able to write a cover letter for a prospective job, start a LinkedIn profile or use this information in an interview. Include your LinkedIn profile link at the end of the bio section.

Include your statement of purpose in your introduction. This should align with your bio and the artefacts you have included.  The artefacts are evidence that supports your statement of purpose.

Example 1:

A life-long data enthusiast: from analysing cricket statistics as a child, to ‘living the dream’, getting paid to maintain data in my part-time work along with demonstrating my knowledge of this at the university.  I have the somewhat rare ability to understand both the technical and business side of company requirements, and therefore am more than capable of tying the two together to achieve optimal outcomes. A key aspiration is to further strengthen…..

Statement of Purpose:

I believe in making the complex simple… giving business users an experience whereby they need never know the work that has gone into producing their requirements.  I will always ask ‘why’ a customer wants a piece produced, rather than just ‘what’, as this gives me the information I need to produce the best possible result, leveraging my knowledge of both business and technology.

Example 2:

I am a dedicated professional with a commitment to championing Diversity and Inclusion within the corporate environment. I am majoring in Human Resource Studies and have successfully gained HR experience in a variety of sectors including, professional services and hospitality.  In these roles, I have effectively championed best practice people management and driven performance improvement. I have also taken the lead in developing diversity and inclusion programs and initiatives through projects within my university studies.

Statement of Purpose:

Passion for people is the reason why I do what I do.

Step 2:  For each of the three artefacts you have included in your e-portfolio, reflect on it based on a module in ITM.

Each of the artefacts in the e-portfolio draws on theory and knowledge covered across three modules of ITM.

1.   What is Management?

Briefly describe the artefact you chose for this module. Reflect on how the artefact relates to managers’ work and how it will help/assist you as a future manager.

If you chose the results of the values test as an artefact, you can reflect on how this test will help you as a future manager and also develop a statement of purpose based on your core values,

For example, The author aspires to be an effective communicator that considers cultural identities when working with others.

2. What is involved in management in organisations?

Briefly describe the artefact you chose for this module. Reflect on how this artefact shows how the context of managers’ work has changed and how this artefact can help/assist you as a future manager. Consider how you can answer the question: what is involved in management in organisations?

For example, you may discuss your Myer Brigg’s style and how this preference may influence your understanding of what is involved in management but also what you perceive as important in managers’ work.

3. What are the key functions a manager needs to address in order to be effective?

Briefly describe the artefact you chose for this module. One of the artefacts must be the Emotional Intelligence micro-credential. Reflect on how this artefact relates to the main functions that managers need to engage in to be effective. Also, reflect on how this artefact will help/assist you in engaging in work and provide knowledge about your capacity to be managed effectively.

For example, when you choose to include the badge of the Emotional Intelligence test done in Week 9 or 10 as your artefact, you can reflect on how managers use emotions to motivate employees. You must also reflect on your potential to use emotions to motivate employees and yourself.

For each reflection, include findings from relevant and current (i.e., within the past 10 years) credible and scholarly work. This could include material you covered in class, from course readings, research from your assignments, or additional research based on the three modules.

These works need to be referenced within the body of the reflection as in-text references as well as at the end, in your reference list. You must use the RMIT Harvard referencing style for formatting all references used in the reflection. See RMIT Easycite.

Step 3: Write a Conclusion

Write a Conclusion to your report by briefly summarising the artefacts chosen and how each relates to the three modules in ITM and what you have learnt from the course that helps you achieve your statement of purpose.

Step 4: Include the reference list

All references cited within the body of the reflection need to be referenced according to the Harvard style in the reference list. Ensure that you include relevant references in this reflection. A minimum of 3 should be included.

About Emotional Intelligence micro-credential :

If you were to type “Emotional Intelligence” into Google search and you will get over 25 million results. This is because EI (emotional intelligence) and EQ (emotional quotient) are common terms and it's important to know exactly what they mean, what others think of EI and EQ, how recruitment specialists use EQ to anticipate your ‘fit’ for an organisation, and how EQ might be a useful way to think about how your emotions affect your behaviour in the workplace.

Moreover, studies suggest that those with high EQ have better mental health, job performance and leadership skills...so it’s definitely worth knowing about! This is true, not only for people in management roles, but for people in all roles of an organisation in order to enhance people skills and build effective relationships.

Assignment - Reflection

Introduction

I am a dedicated professional working in the field of operations management with a commitment to achieve objectives of the organization in a given corporate environment. I am majoring in Operations Studies and have successfully gained Operations experience in the manufacturing and automobile sectors.

I have also attended seminars and workshops to sharpen my skills in the field of Quality Management. I these roles, I have found myself breaking complex objectives into simple and thereby completing the assigned tasks within the given timeframe.

I have championed best practices in quality management, six sigma methodology, project management, change management, and people management to ensure driving the desired performance in a required direction. I have also taken initiatives in developing programs and short-projects through my course curriculum at my University.

It thereby assists me in enhancing my overall skills and also provides me an opportunity to work in this direction. Today, with increased challenges, I am ready to deliver the best possible results by leveraging on my knowledge and expertise and by aligning with the objectives of the organization.

Discussion

  • What is management?

Today, with increased challenges in the global environment, it is found that the managers need to learn and implement new project management methodologies and frameworks to improve the workplace environment. The focus of the managers is not only to complete the assigned tasks but also to improve the workplace efficiency and effectiveness in a given environment (Montes-Guerra et al., 2015).

Further, the managers need to overcome the workplace challenges by essentially deploying change management techniques and increasing work collaboration between different departments of the organization. It is often noticed that due to lack of communication, work approach, leadership, and collaboration, the projects turn fail; it is thereby the responsibility of the project team and the senior management to overcome the challenges by not only improving communications but also by motivating the employees in the right direction (Montes-Guerra et al., 2015).

At this juncture, the role of the Human Resources (HR) department is to train the staff in the right direction and on the modules of leadership and management. The managers to improve their managerial skills need to first plan the objectives in the organization. They can thereby perform a course of actions through which they will be able to complete those tasks in a given working environment.

Further, they need to monitor the practices and strategies implemented and thereby check whether they are performing as per the expectations or not. They can thereby modify their steps as and when required. I have worked in similar project management methodologies in one of the automobile manufacturing companies.

I observed that the leaders and project managers will be breaking the complex task into multiple smaller tasks; they will thereby assign a team to each of these task and ensure that it is completed within the timeframe. However, the role of management techniques is important in such projects to overcome workplace issues, improve work coordination, improvise communications, take better decisions, and motivate the staff to continue working in the organization (Kalogerou & White, 2014). Only then the organization will be able to achieve desired objectives within a given operational environment.

  • Why do managers need to be effective at working in different contexts?

Today, with increased globalization, the organizations are planning for expansion. They want to open at new locations and thereby increase the total sales of the organization. It will subsequently help them improve bottom-lines of the organization. However, before expanding into any of the nations or new locations, the organization needs to conduct internal and external analysis (Ge & Ho, 2014).

The internal analysis will provide them with outcomes on their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. On the other hand, the external analysis will provide them with information on challenges in new work environment, problems of new work culture, expectations of employees, motivation issues of the employees, and work coordination problems at the workplace (Ge & Ho, 2014).

A manager is thereby required to first develop the skill-set of managing a workforce belonging to diverse religious and social backgrounds. Second, these employees will have different expectations from the organization; the HR team thereby needs to conduct an analysis that will provide them with information on the motivation sources of the employees (Legault, 2013).

Third, managers will be required to work in a diverse context as the location will change for them. They will be operating at a new location and will also need to deliver the projects as per the expectations of the organization. Under such circumstances, it will be difficult for the managers need to first learn the values and principles of a new culture; they also need to adhere to the local rules and regulations while operating in a new working environment.

Further, he also needs to play the role of a leader and deploy transformational leadership style at the workplace to improve workplace communications, working efficiency of the employees, and overcome work challenges in a given working environment (Legault, 2013).

It will thereby help the manager to manage the project at a new location with diverse workforce in a better way; he also needs to collaborate with the top-level management and provide them with updates on the project (Hodgson & Briand, 2013). The top-level management on the other hand will be monitoring the status of the project and will provide necessary recommendations wherever required.

  • How Emotional Intelligence Micro-Credential will assist Managers to improve the workplace of the Organization?

Emotional Intelligence refers to the capacity of the individuals to identify their emotions and of others and thereby seek desired motivation in their respective organization. It is found that people with better Emotional Intelligence will be able to perform better in the organization. They will have enhanced leadership skills, managerial qualities, and also greater mental health to handle pressure situations (Arena et al., 2013).

I have found in one of my work experiences that my manager used to scale the Emotional Intelligence of all the employees and based on that use to allocate different tasks to all the team members. It thereby helped in reducing overall time, efforts, and costs overheads for each of such tasks in the organization.

It is the responsibility of the managers and the HR department to determine the motivation sources of the employees, work with them on individual basis, and accordingly train them on the different technical aspects as required. Also, the managers need to use this as a tool or technique to measure the overall Emotional Intelligence of the employee.

It will help him determine the major strengths and weaknesses of the employee; the manager can thereby allocate the task based on his skills and strengths. It will thereby assist in completing the assigned task within the given timeframe and also as per the expectations of the organization.

Conclusion

Today, with increased challenges in the external environment, the role of the project managers has turned significant in the organization. The project managers need to perform multiple tasks in their working environment; they thereby need to plan the strategies, overcome the major hurdles, and bridge the gaps in the current working processes of the organization (Brookfield et al., 2014).

A project manager needs to first identify the vision and mission of the organization. Based on that he can deploy leadership and management theories in the origination; he can guide the employees and provide them with necessary assistance wherever required. It will thereby help them complete the assigned project as per the expectations of the top-level management in the organization (Brookfield et al., 2014).

I have experienced different models and frameworks implemented in the organization. I have also witnesses the approach through which change management techniques are implemented in the organization. I can thereby follow the rules and procedures of each of these models and thereby make sure of achieving required objectives.

Further, I have also learned different project management methodologies hat will help me improve the quality of the processes that are conducted in the organization. However, I still need to improve on - communications, work collaborations, adhering to the legal norms, and empowering other team members in a given working environment.

I also need to upgrade my skills and knowledge on Emotional Intelligence so that I can work with other employees in a better way. It is noticed that there are also different risk factors present in the internal and external working environment (Brookfield et al., 2014). I thereby need to develop a risk mitigation plan through which I shall be able to overcome different workplace challenges, manage the risks, and ensure successful completion of the project within the given timeframe.

I also need to learn practicing the techniques of change management so that I can first inform employees about the major benefits of a new working system. It will motivate them to work on this new module and subsequently accept the new working approach in a given work environment.

I also need to apply the techniques of agile project management to accept and respond to change, deploy technological tools, analyze the risks, and thereby implement appropriate methodologies to not only bridge the gaps but also ensure effective completion of the project as per the expectations of the senior management.

I further need to install performance analysis tools so that I can measure the performance of different strategies and techniques implemented in a given work environment. I also need to work on - cost management, quality management, HR management, risk management, and procurement management to improve the project outcomes. I need to provide all types of support and assistance to rest of the team members wherever required. It will thereby help all the employees to complete their tasks on time, as per the expectations, and subsequently streamline the business processes in a given work environment
