Your boss, the Director of Communications at Company XYZ, has been invited to speak at a local conference on the topic ‘Factors impacting on communication in today’s workplace’. She has asked you to prepare an executive summary highlighting three key impacts on communication.

Please follow these guidelines to complete the assessment:

  1. Engage in research to find three articles (academic journal and/or industry journal) related to current impacts on communication in the workplace. Use search engines such as Google Scholar and the SCU library website to do your research.
  2. After carefully reading the three articles, identify three key points that impact on communication in the workplace to form the structure for the body of your work.
  3. The balance between your thoughts and words expressed in your voice and those of other authors is important. Support for each point must come from at least TWO of your THREE sources to support your claims, arguments and ideas.

For each point you are expected to incorporate another author’s ideas or information into your work through:

  1. direct quotation (please note: no long quotes of more than 30 words)
  2. ii. paraphrase
  3. iii. summary.The citation of sources is a two-part process:
  4. in the body of your paper: cite the authors in the text of your paper with a signal phrase or place the citation in parentheses following the paraphrase or summary.

The purpose of the memo is identifying and analysing three significant factors affecting communication in organisations. Therefore, it firstly inspects the impact of employee mobility on communication. Next, it focuses on the effects of clear strategy on corporate communication, and finally, it explores the influence of outside constituencies on workplace communication. For developing this report, different articles are searched using the Google search engine and Google Scholar. Those articles are used from developing and supporting the critical themes pertain to workplace communication.  

At present, the high mobility of the workforce has a direct impact on making workplace communication complicated. As stated by Argenti (2006), today’s employees depend on electronic communication techniques for connecting to their managers and peers using instead of physical nearness. Thus, the distance makes it difficult for companies communicating organisational cultures, vision and value clearly to these employees. Chernyak-Hai & Rabenu (2018) opined that the increased movement of employees had raised the requirement for managers monitoring staff through electronic media like e-mails. The lack of personal connection results in condensed nous of belongingness. However, workers can also be braver due to the mobility, as they can acquire information directly from the source without the need of waiting for the management to communicate a packaged business message. Thus, employee mobility in one side creates difficulty in developing a strong relationship with the employees because of a lack of personal contact. On the other hand, it makes staff more independent in terms of sourcing information and making a decision. 

At recent time, a clear communication strategy articulated by the managers has a significant influence on corporate communication. Argenti (2017) commented that for implementing any business strategy, it needs making employees of all the levels understanding the plan clearly. For improving understanding, the strategy must be communicated clearly and consistently. Therefore, the communication strategy involves creating some buzzwords or phrases that remind employees about the business strategy and goals. In the words of Linton et al. (2016) developing communication strategies like informal communication through inviting employees at lunch and dinner or developing an active communication channel can influence workplace communication positively.

Outside constituencies can influence workplace communication with external stakeholders both positively and negatively by spreading any stories. According to Argenti (2006), modern information technology has made it easier for the outside constituencies dispersing whatever information about a company. It may disclose business information to the public by the non-governmental organisation.  Also, it is instructed by the federal legislation that needs organisations sharing information with all the electorates that force managers being more resistible for their corporate actions.Chernyak-Hai & Rabenu (2018) stated that such legislation would not be possible without bringing changes in technology, which enables organisations emancipating material info to all the constituents together. Thus, companies need to be focused on running business responsible, so that components share only positive information.  

In conclusion, it can be stated that several factors are there that need to be considered by the new organisations for making the organisational communication effective. Employee mobility, communication strategy and outside constituencies have a significant impact on workplace communication with internal and external stakeholders.
