Assessment details

Assessment 1: Research Proposal

This assessment is for these students only: Brisbane - Hotel School; Melbourne - Hotel School; Sydney - Hotel School.

This assessment is the first part of your research project. Your research project should investigate a topic related to the hospitality industry that is an area of interest to you.

In this assessment, you will be required to identify a research project . Your research project should be conducted using secondary (desktop) research.

The proposal will include:

  • Title of your research
  • Introduction – overview of the topic and the significance of the proposed research.
  • Overview of the Industry Partner; or background to your desktop (secondary) research area
  • Problem statement
  • Aim of research – including evidence of how data will be collected
  • Research question/s
  • Annotated bibliography of 3 key journal articles that support your research and/or background to the research problem.

Assessment 2: Literature review

This assessment is for these students only: Brisbane - Hotel School; Melbourne - Hotel School; Sydney - Hotel School.

Rationale:

This assessment involves an in-depth exploration of the relevant literature for your research project. The literature review task will serve as a foundation for Assessment 3. “Importantly, a literature review sets the context for your study and provides the framework for interpreting your findings and results” (SCU Writing a literature review quick guide, 2020).

Task:

Demonstrate engagement with, and critical review of, literature in the field relevant to your research area.

The literature review should;

  • investigate previous research and find out what’s been done before
  • consider theoretical frameworks
  • identify ‘gaps’ in existing knowledge to find out how your study fits within current knowledge and understanding
  • determine/clarify/justify your research question/problem
  • select the most appropriate methodology (if applicable)

The literature review will include:

  • Restate aim and research question/s (include any updates from assessment 1)
  • Introduction - a brief overview of the chosen research area
  • Review of literature in the field relevant to your research (minimum 8 academic journal articles)
  • Discussion of methodologies used in the field/s
  • Theoretical framework / conceptual map
  • Conclusion
  • Reference list using Harvard referencing

Assessment 3: Presentation

This assessment is for these students only: Brisbane - Hotel School; Melbourne - Hotel School; Sydney - Hotel School.

Task:

You are required to make a 5-minute presentation/research pitch in class outlining your research project. A maximum of 5 PowerPoint slides (plus references slide) will be permitted.

Assessment 4: Report

This assessment is for these students only: Brisbane - Hotel School; Melbourne - Hotel School; Sydney - Hotel School.

Rationale:

Your final written report, which is expected to be informative, credible, and persuasive. The report should demonstrate the research process that has been followed in order to develop an informed and professional report addressing a real-time research problem, and providing recommendations that are evidence-based.

Task:

You are required to present a final written report based on your completed research project. This should follow the structure outlined in the Final Report Checklist document (a separate document located in the assessment tasks and submission tab).
