Interpersonal Communication on Discharge of Patient
The current report aims to illustrate the importance and different aspects of interpersonal communication in accordance with a youtube video. The video is about a meeting regarding the discharge of a patient in a healthcare organization. After conducting an analysis, it has been witnessed that there is a dearth of eye contact, two way communications and collaboration in the communication procedure.
Interpersonal communication is defined as the process by means of which there is exchange of information between two or more persons. The purpose of the current research is to discuss and analyze the various factors of interpersonal communication in compliance with a video where there is communication between doctors regarding a patient. The background of the current report rests on the different aspects of interpersonal communication and to what extent those have been adhered to in a provided scenario. The provided scenario includes a meeting which is held on the discharge of a patient and the associated healthcare professionals are doctor, pharmacist, unit manager, physiotherapist, psychotherapist and a nurse.
The importance of good interpersonal communication
The importance of interpersonal communication is to indulge into flow of information from one person to another and therefore, it takes place through either verbally and non-verbally. As far as verbal communications is concerned, it allows in the flow of information (Hargie, 2016). On the contrary, non-verbal communication refers to the cognitive behavior of the concerned individual, his facial expression and bodily gesture. Thus, according to Wood (2015), it can be analyzed in this context that while verbal communication refers to the flow of information, non-verbal communication is associated with making an impact on the mind of the listener and thus, he can understand the mood or the context in which the individual is speaking. Thus, both verbal and non-verbal communication has a role to play in interpersonal communication. An important aspect of interpersonal communication lies in the indulgence and direct involvement of two or more persons in the communication process. Moreover, as mentioned by Berger (2014), active participation and listening skills of the members is also anticipated because that creates an ambiance for the members to have interest and participate in the communication process fully. However, since these factors are important, it is necessary that the member speaking has interest of the other persons. However, devoid of that, the members would soon lose interest in the communication process, thereby, resulting in the ineffectiveness of it.
As far as interpersonal communication is concerned, there are a number of models that are associated with it. Firstly, in the opinion of Cappella (2017), the linear model of communication is associated with communication where only one of the speakers speaks with the aim of catering information to the related members of the communication process. However, one of the issues that is associated with linear model is the dearth of two way communication between the members. There is often no participation of the other persons and thus, it indulges only a one way communication. Thus, based on this it can be stated that linear model shall not be applied in the provided scenario because it is a discharge meeting and needs communicative participation of each of the healthcare professionals. Along with that, the interaction model of communication involves a communication process where there is communication from both the ways and the members respond to what the speaker is saying. Thus, as stated by Arnold, and Boggs (2015), it helps in the understanding by the speaker of whether the information has been delivered effectively and has been understood. Thirdly, the most effective communication model is transactional model. In the opinion of Papadopoulos et al. (2016), transaction model is related with active participation of each of the members in the communication process. There is spontaneous reaction and feedback of the members to the information shared by the speaker. This helps the speakers to understand that information has been delivered and thus, also encourages him to communicate more. Therefore, the transaction model of communication shall be the most appropriate in the provided scenario.
Analysis of behavioral contributions of each individual professional
The video starts with a communication process being conducted among doctors. The purpose of their communication is to discuss of a patient and decide whether he should be provided with discharge or not. In the opinion of O'Toole (2016), listening plays an important role in interpersonal communication. The primary purpose of communication is to deliver specific knowledge and information on the minds of the associated people. Thus, listening happens to be one of the crucial factors as that allows the person to understand and analyze the knowledge catered to them and thus, resulting in the effectiveness of the communication process. In the provided video, it has been witnessed that there is no listening of the doctors who are associated with the communication process. Thus, at the very beginning, the speakers would develop a dearth of interest due to the lack of attention of the other members in listening to what each of the members are exclaiming. In addition to that, as stated by Riley (2015), listening also allows the members associated with a communication process to understand the piece of information and analyze it. In this regard, he shall also respond and shall ask a question if he has any query to solve. Therefore, it can be understood in this context that listening not only helps in understanding a piece of knowledge, but also allows the development of a relationship between the members by allowing a two way communication. However, despite this, in the provided scenario, there was a dearth of listening of the members. It has been evident in a number of scenes where there is no prompt response of the members and the speaker is just speaking without getting any response from anyone. According to Rider et al. (2014), the dearth of listening of members in a communication process makes the speaker reluctant to what he wants to share. Thus, similarly in the current scenario the purpose of the communication process was to discuss of one of the patients and his condition and that was being disrupted by a dearth in the communication skills of the members. In addition to that, the knowledge catered by each of the members in the communication process was also being disrupted and it would only contribute to the worsening of the healthcare sector in the long run, thereby, creating a loophole in the treatment procedure (Betancourt et al. 2016). A detrimental evidence of the dearth of interest and listening skill would be when one of the speakers was speaking. However, the other members in the communication process were least willing to take part in that or even have the smallest notion of what the communication process was going about. For instance, while speaking, the make doctor was doing something with his stethoscope, while the students nurse was playing with her hair. Along with that, the pharmacist was using her mobile and the scenario persisted like this. Therefore, as influenced by Schubart et al. (2015), in this kind of a scenario, anybody would feel reluctant in sharing their viewpoints or taking the communication process to furtherance.
Analysis of the effectiveness of this inter-professional team
In addition to that, as commented by Bach and Grant (2015), communication is not only the process of delivering the idea of a person. It also includes allowing enough room to other people to share their ideas and viewpoints. The current scenario was associated with one of the patients regarding her health and medicine. The doctors were supposed to take possible steps for constituting into the best possible outcome of the treatment process and also refraining the patient from any sort of adverse factors such as drugs which may affect her ongoing treatment process. However, in the current scenario, it was witnessed that the patient was already involved in the communication process. Despite that, she was not given adequate space to share her opinions. The doctors were not witnessed to be communication to her directly. According to Manojlovich et al. (2015), direct communication plays an important role in putting a direct impact on the mind of the listener and thus, the chances are more likely that he would listen to what the speaker is saying. However, the dearth of a direct communication between the doctors and the patient would not be helpful in making a significant impact on her mental state and thus, she would not constitute into the betterment and well being of her health. Thus, this also reflects a poor form of interpersonal communication between the members arranging the meeting. They must have communicated with the patient directly for impacting her mental state and also make her feel confident.
In the provided scenario, collaboration and team work are missing. According to Farzadnia and Giles (2015), patient centered care has been one of the major factors that the healthcare organizations work towards. However, for that matter, there is a need of communicating among them and each of the units communicates among themselves to provide a best in class service to the patient. In compalicne with that, it has been witnessed in the current scenario that, there is a dearth of interpersonal communication between the different members in the meeting including the doctor, the pharmacist, the unit manager, nurse and others. As influenced by Hargie (2016), the implementation of the transaction model shows that there is no active participation of the members and they are just communicating their own viewpoints without feeling the need of what the other person is saying. As a result, there is no continuous feedback and response as well. However, it is to be noted in this regard that the healthcare professionals are arranging the meeting for the fulfillment of a common goal which is to discuss of whether the patient should be discharged or not. Therefore, for the achievement of this goal, there is a huge need off collaboration and working as a team altogether, for which communication is the most essential factor (Wood, 2015).
Organizational impact from such a team performance
Primarily, the dearth of interpersonal communication factors in the provided scenario would result in an ineffective healthcare service in the sector. As stated by Berger (2014), the goal of every healthcare organization is to contribute to the betterment of the facilities and the services catered to the patients. However, the dearth of better facility would incur an adverse impact on the family of the patients and there would be wastage of the resources catered to the healthcare professionals for bringing betterment in the healthcare sector. This would also culminate into the dissatisfaction of the patient and her family. As commented by Cappella (2017), communication helps in the ultimate betterment of an organization as there is spontaneous reaction of the people and thus, they shall aim high towards a better decision making process. In the provided scenario, there is no such interest shown by any of the healthcare professionals. As a result of that, primarily there would be dissatisfaction of the patient and her family. As a result of that, the services and the facilities of the healthcare organization would gain defame in the market, thus, culminating into its deterioration.
On the basis of the findings of the current research, it can be stated that interpersonal communication plays an immensely important role in a better decision making process by involving the active participation and culminating into a range of ideas. Particularly, in healthcare sector, interpersonal communicating helps in patient centered care by involving each of the associated members and thus, they shall act according to the information provided by the other sector. In the provided scenario, it can be clearly evidenced that there was a dearth of communication with no attention being paid to the communication of the other person. Thus, they could make no effective decision. Furthermore, that would also culminate into the deterioration of the market position of the healthcare organization.
In order to eradicate the issues, it can be recommended that the professionals must have indulged into some of the important factors such as eye contact, bodily gesture. They must have paid attention to what the other professionals were saying because that would incorporate into a two way communication and lead to a better decision. Furthermore, in accordance with the transaction model, there must be feedback and response provided by the professionals as well for making it understandable for the speaker that the information provided by him was being delivered.
