Organizational productivity depends on the leadership enforced by the company largely. The current report attempts to define leadership in accordance to several established beliefs (Bellamy, 2015). Along with that the moot objective of the study is to decipher between leadership and management and to locate two different leadership style that can effectively endorse organizational change. 

What is leadership?

Leadership is widely considered one of the moot driving forces that can bring organizational change and can be functional in increasing employee productivity. Leaders are the instruments who drive people in the right direction. In organizational context a leadership is considered to be the essence of effective employee management. Along with effectively directing people, it is also important for the leaders to have management skills (Algahtani, 2014). The idea of leadership varies from one context to another and there are several approaches of leadership. 

Experts have often argued regarding the most effective leadership style. Leadership is often associated with transformation. The idea of transformational leadership is based on the following foundations of leadership.

  • Leadership is considered to be essential in inspiring the vision of future
  • It motivates and inspires people to be effectively engaged in the vision
  • It also significantly manages the process of delivering the process
  • Effective leaders build a productive team that is engaged closely in achieving vision

Leadership can cohort the expertise that are required in achieving the aspired vision of an organization. 

Several theories of leadership focus on different elements of leadership. Employee motivation has been closely related to the leadership skills. An effective leader can successfully motivate the employees to be more engaged. A high performance working framework is greatly dependent to proper leadership style and management skills. Three of the widely acclaimed theories of leadership are Contingency theory, transactional theory and transformational theory of leadership. However, among the approaches transformational theory of leadership has played an essential role in transforming bureaucratic structure and power culture of the organizations. 

Difference between Leadership and management

Several critics have argued regarding the elementary difference of management and leadership. Leadership is essentially different from management. In order to understand the difference it is important to closely examine both of the ideas of leadership and management. Leadership is an essential quality that is inherent in people that has the credibility to influence people in order to attain the organizational objectives seamlessly (Northouse, 2015). It can not same as management but leadership is considered to be one of the major attributes of the managers. Management is primarily a discipline that is associated with managing things in order to run an organization in a structured manner. From the following comparison, the difference between leadership and management can be easily understood.

Examples of leaders

There are several leadership approaches that are accumulated by the leaders of the organizations. Authoritarian, Paternalistic, Democratic and Transactional leadership styles are some of the widely followed styles by leaders all over the globe (Goetsch and Davis, 2014). This study discusses two of the most followed leadership styles that are transformational and transactional leadership styles.

  • Transactional leaders

Transactional leaders usually have a strong sense of distinction between the leaders and the subordinates. The practitioners of this leadership style believe in exchanging benefits or transactions from the subordinates (Long, 2017). According to the perspective of a transactional leader the promise regarding reward works as the essential driving force in obtaing optimal productivity of the subordinates. 

  • Transformational leaders

Transformational leaders introspect themselves to be the social engineers who seek the scope of improvement and motivates to bring change in the existing organizational structure and culture (Long, 2017). These types of leaders concentrate on the strength and the weakness of the subordinates and also locates the scope of improvement. The information regarding the strengths and weaknesses of the followers are taken under consideration in order to achieve optimal productive outcome out of the employees. 


There are several well-acknowledged leadership theories that leaders of the globally acknowledged leaders follow. According to leadership, expert Warren Bennis leadership indicates the capacity of translating a vision into reality (Bennis, 2015). Great leaders possess social intelligence and acquisition of different perspectives can be found in the effective leaders. The great leaders are aware of the practicality of a vision and apart from developing a vision, the moot responsibility of a leader is to set direction and inspiring the participants to achieve the vision. Recent studies have focussed on utilizing the inner resources of psyche in order to perform as an effective leader that can be instrumental in seamlessly obtaining the aim of any organization or institution. In the light of the above study, herein, it can be stated that leaders and managers are essentially difference because of the prime distinction between the idea of leadership and management. In order to achieve optimal productivity it is important for an organization to have a skilled leader that can motivate the employees.
