4. An evaluation of how well it was applied including any particular strength or weakness in the application and any lesson that can be drawn from the experience.
Leaders are always an important part of an organization that has a great role to play in the success of the business. One of the most essential roles of a leader is to constitute into employee management and thus, motivation is an indispensable factor of their job role. Leaders are often expected to motivate their employees to ensure that they gain satisfaction in the course of their working procedure. For that purpose, the individualistic needs of the employees are important so that those could be fulfilled. This would be beneficial for the employees as well for the organization. This is because employee motivation often results in lowering down employee turnover rate, thereby, reducing the cost of the organization incurred on recruitment and selection procedure. The aim of the current research is to focus on the different roles of leader and discuss those taking into consideration the case and scenario of an organization. The first topic which shall be discussed in the current section is the motivation and empowerment of people. In the second section, the topic of discussion is Strategic direction. The organization which has been selected for discussion is Woolworths.
MOTIVATING AND EMPOWERING PEOPLE
As far as the employees of Woolworths are concerned, the need for motivating them is immense. In the opinion of Miner (2015), one of the issues that a majority of the organizations face is in terms of the huge expense associated with recruitment and selection process and therefore, this shall be curbed with the help of motivation to a great extent. Thus, as a leader, the manager is to take charge of reducing the cost of the company and that is the reason for which motivation is integrated into the business procedure. Furthermore, motivation would also culminate into a reduction of employee turnover and as a result, the company would be able to hold on to its most talented and skillful workers. Adequate remuneration is the most important factor that drives the interest and satisfaction of the employees. However, when taken the role of the leader into consideration the satisfactory role of the employees is determined by a number of factors; a majority of which consists of the internal scenario of the business (Deschamps et al. 2014). Therefore, the managers at Woolworths has paid attention to the creation of an environment where the employees shall be able to work freely and comfortable and at the same time are able to work on their own goals and specifications.
However, it must be noted that employee motivation is important as well as one of the most difficult job roles of a leader. In order to successfully constitute into employee motivation, there is a need for many skills of the leader. The need for motivation in the aforementioned company further increases because a number of students were working in the company as part time workers and therefore, their satisfaction and positive mindset were one of the most crucial factors that the leader of the company aimed at. As influenced by Koh (2015), to this segment of people, remuneration is not that important factor and therefore, in order to cater positive impact of them, the role of an internal business environment is indispensable.
Role of leaders in motivation
As influenced by Anra and Yamin (2017), the theory of McGregor shall be taken into consideration in this aspect which rests on two theories of X and Y. The former is associated with an authoritarian form of leadership where there are little power and importance given to the employees with a notion that there is a dearth of skill and knowledge in them. Thus, they are always supervised and reviewed in terms of the work they put in and are always provided with feedback for creating betterment in their performance and mitigating the issues. On the contrary, the theory Y is related to providing a platform to the employees to showcase their skills and knowledge and also providing them adequate allowance to make important decisions in the company’s business affairs. As far as Woolworths is concerned, the leaders of the organization put more emphasis on theory Y and that acts as an important factor of motivation. They are always allowed to communicate and share their views. As mentioned by Fernet et al. (2015), in teamwork and collaboration each of the individuals is given equal preference and are assessed of their ideas and notions individually. The theory Y helps employees stay motivated and ambitious. Therefore, at Woolworths, employees are given responsibilities and the power to act in the decision making process so that they could work on themselves and act responsibly. As influenced by Graves and Sarkis (2018), it is believed that when employees are given any act of responsibility they learn the importance of self control and there is also increase in their self esteem.
Taking the Maslow’s hierarchy of needs into consideration, it could be stated that employees in business have certain basic needs and those are not to fulfill the organizational needs. Therefore, the managers at Woolworths pay attention to the identification of the employees’ needs at first (Miner, 2015). Furthermore, at the very onset of the recruitment and selection of the employees, they are also assessed of their skills which help in the identification of their strengths and weaknesses. Thus, on the basis of that, the managers ensure to allocate them the tasks accordingly. This is also an important factor of motivation for the employees as they do not have to do tasks and take roles which do not comply with their skills and knowledge. Moreover, in accordance with the Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, it is also important that the organizational goals and comply with the individualistic needs of the employees and therefore, they would be more inclined towards the fulfillment of the organizational goals and objectives. On the basis of that, the managers and leaders at Woolworths ensure to pay attention to the needs and objectives of the employees first and then the organization (Deschamps et al. 2016).
In order to further focus on the factor of motivation triggered by leadership, the expectancy theory shall be selected. As commented by Koh (2015), employees need to be hugely aware of the skills that they possess and therefore, it would only be possible with the help of skill assessment that they would do their piece of work efficiently. Therefore, the managers and higher officials at Woolworths conduct training and meeting procedure for the employees at regular intervals. This helps both the managers and the employees to identify the specific skill set acquired by each of the employees. There are plenty of opportunities provided to the employees to grow and learn and constitute into betterment. The betterment of skills and performance of the employees is an important factor of motivation as that would make them more content in terms of the performance they put in. Thus, there would be more confident in their work which would benefit the production process of the company. The betterment of the company’s business procedure would further work as a motivational factor for the employees because they would consider themselves well competitive in terms of the performance they put in to the working procedure of the organization (Anra and Yamin, 2017).

The primary goal of Woolworths is to focus on its quality and provide the best quality fruits and food products to the consumers. As stated by Covin and Slevin (2017), the reason for which Woolworths is one of the best companies in the market is because of the high end quality of the products coupled with low price. Along with that, being a customer centric company, the aim of the company is to open a number of outlets in different corners of the country to make it increasingly accessible for the customers to have a visit at the stores. Thus, in order to fulfill the goals of the company, the leaders of the company have taken a number of roles and steps. The primary strategy of Woolworths is to have adequate knowledge of the customers so that their needs could be fulfilled with the help of the products and services of the company. Henceforth, the brand has integrated a number of communicative strategies to maintain a connection and communication process with the customers. The customers are assessed in terms of their feedback an opinion of the products and services of the company. According to Langley et al. (2017), the purpose of communication is also to ensure that the customers are able to understand the value proposition of the organization. Furthermore, other forms of strategies are to reduce the operational cost so that there could be reduction of the prices of the products of the company as well.
The strategy formulation and implementation process at Woolworths is driven by the leadership style of the company to a great extent. The role of the employees is important in this aspect which drives the production process. This would result in the betterment of the productivity process and therefore, would help in catering better services to the customers. in addition to that, in order to have a smooth flow of work, the organizational structure of the company is also paid much attention to (Marshall, 2019). The CEO is at the top, who directs the important decisions of the company and also allocates tasks to the respective individuals. Thus, the well structured organizational structure helps in the better flow of communication which helps in the strategic direction process better.
When customers are the pillar of an organization it is essential that they are being provided with transparency and fairness. Thus, the leader at Woolworths ensures that there is well communication process with the customers so that they could be aware of the business procedure of the firm and could influence their buying decision accordingly.
