Learning Skills for University Students
Learning and acquiring knowledge on a wide range of topics needs a student to visit the library or access digital libraries of universities. Using an university’s website and digital archives is something essential that would provide a student with important materials to help them to study and meet the necessary requirements.
Advantages of using the physical and digital libraries
There are numerous advantages to using the library access on case of a student. Libraries give important and valuable resources that can assist in the learning process. Physical libraries are often more prefered by students, scholars and researchers alike as they are much easier to use. While physical libraries often have more relevant source material on a particular topic, which can be accessed easily, digital libraries have much diverse articles and books and journals on a huge array of topics that can encompass things ranging from thermodynamics to agriculture. WOU’s digital library supplies the students with every resource that they can possibly need in order to do their work and assignments efficiently and optimally. The digital library also has proven to be a huge help for the students who enrolled in the ODL program (Tejeda-Lorente et al. 2014). This library grants access to everyone who are unable to access the library physically.
Learning Management System
The university’s websites also have effective learning management systems, that help the students to plan for the studies and also facilitate Open Distance Learning (ODL). ODL is a learning process where the teacher and the student are in two different geographical locations. The whole process of learning is done by using the internet. LMS is the software package that ensures that contents and resource materials are managed properly and delivered to the students (Conde et al. 2014). This has become an integral part in the learning process of WOU as this software is incredibly flexible and can adjust as per the requirements and benefits of both the students and the teachers.
Open group discussions
WOU also lets its students contact teachers and other fellow students to receive help during the learning process. Open group discussions help a student to learn new things and rectify backlogs by using important information and inputs that are given by their colleagues. Even teachers can be approached through these discussion platforms. They help the students via social media platforms and even personal chats.
The websites and libraries and other methods of learnings that are adopted by WOU are particularly focused upon the causes and needs of the students. Digital and physical: both libraries provide resources and materials that help the students to reach their goals and gain all the knowledge that they seek.
Traditional learning is something that is learnt from the very beginning of the learning processes. Traditional learning process starts from the school life, where students learns from different books and lectures of the tutors. The process continues throughoutentire school life. After the school life the learning process separates into two parts. The students can continue traditional learning from colleges and private tutors or they can have open distance learning from online sites and distant college or universities. In this project it is to be discussed which of the learning processes are advantageous for the students and what are the differences between them.
Differences between traditional learning and open distance learning
i) No flexibility of time in Learning Traditional – fixed time
In traditional learning process if a student misses the class, the student will miss the learning
On the other hand open distance learning does not have any timetable; the students can use computer and other study materials that will give them the access to learn by themselves.
In traditional learning, the subjects regarding to the learning process have fixed timetables and hence, cannot be skipped during the whole class. The learning process in traditional style needs the gathering of all the students, which are scheduled in the learning process. However, such things are not needed in the open distance learning process (Clark and Mayer, 2016).
ii) Teacher based system: Traditional learning processes are based on the teacher. If the teacher is absent the learning processes get interrupted. The students miss the whole learning process. The students fall behind as the time passes by and the learning process gets stopped.
But in the open distance Learning- the students can get notes and other study materials from online. The learning process does not involve face to face learning, the students are able get all the information which are required for the students. The students also get some real time lectures and assignment, which are needed to be completed in a fixed deadline. This process enhances the students to complete all the assignments and tasks allocated to them even in faster way (Liebowitz and Frank, 2016).
iii) The traditional learning course is expensive compare to ODL
The traditional learning process does not require too much expense. As the study materials are the only things that are needed. No advanced technologies and devices are needed. This technologies and devices are the expensive materials that are essential in the open distance learning. Advanced technologies and devices such as laptop, net equipments, web cameras, headsets, email accessories, which are not being affordable for poor peoples.
iv) Fixed curriculum- Traditional learning processes include subjects that are compulsory for the boards and universities exams, and are needed to be studied in order to pass the exams. However, open distance learning processes are regular and should be continued in a regular basis. This learning process does not requires any particular locations like the traditional learning process. Students need to take admissions in a particular institute and need to attend classes at a regular basis. The classes are conducted in particular institutes (Allen, 2016).
