Assessment 4:
Assessment Details:
Students are required to conduct self-reflection associated with personal learning. You are required to identify the key issues and findings from your learning outcomes Reflection on learning and progress is based on the following:
After studying different types of information system that can be used for business management. Discuss how the management information system can be practically applied in the manufacturing, medical and education sectors. In Week-3, you studied the advantages and disadvantages associated with the implementation of an enterprise resource planning system. SAP R/3 software application is an example of ERP system, in your opinion, do your think SAP R/3 is the best application for all business? Justify your answer. Artificial intelligence (A1) systems form a broad and diverse set of systems that can replicate human decision making for certain types of problems. In week-4, discuss the Business Intelligence and Knowledge Management. Reflect your understanding with the support of examples, the techniques of using the A1 in supporting Knowledge Management system in making correct decision, Do you believe it is ethical and legal for the executives to monitor or spy their employee's online behaviour and activities? Why or why not? Would you spy on your employee's online activities once you become a leader of an organization? Why or why not? Could you give a real example or evidence where employees are caught up for their immoral online behaviour? If you were the leader of that company how would you deal with that situation?
This assignment is intended to describe a reflection about different IT related issues. For this purposes, a brief understanding of different items and issues has been shown in the paper which needs to be addressed in the reflection.
Application of management information system in the medical, manufacturing and educational sectors:
A management information system is highly essential in the medical industry. I think that the health information system in the form of a management information system that is used in the medical sector. Health information system refers to the system which is designed for managing the healthcare data (Wager, Lee & Glaser, 2017). Therefore, I can say from the fact that HIS can be used for collecting, storing, managing and transmitting the medical record of patients. HIS can be useful in the operation management of the hospital. Example of the health information system is an electronic health record which replaces the paper version of the medical history of the patient.
Manufacturing is the area where the information system has made significant impacts. I have observed that manufacturing MIS is associated with monitoring the flow of products and materials in every level of employees. In the process of manufacturing, raw materials are transformed into the finished products (Fountas et al. 2015). In that consequence, I can say that manufacturing MIS is involved in offering a good set of information which can be helpful to make the right decision.
Data is the lifeline of every educational organisation, from the turnover rate of the students to the financial record of the organisation, every level of an educational organisation requires the involvement of the MIS (Laudon & Laudon, 2016). I have observed that educational management information system is specially designed for monitoring the performance of the education program offered by education institutes and managing the distribution of the education resource allocation. Therefore, it can be said by me that for providing an excellent education to the students, EMIS is necessary because it helps in identifying the performance of educational programs which helps in developing a better educational program to increase efficiencies of students.
Effectiveness of SAP R/3:
The client-server architecture has become popular among the ERP developers so that the SAP R/3 version has been launched. According to Kim, Kang & Lee (2016), in R/3, R stands for the real-time data processing and three stands for the three-tier architecture. According to me, the version of SAP is highly effective because this version of SAP has made the SAP ERP in becoming compatible with the multiple operating systems and platforms. I have observed that big organisation that are working from different locations with the help of an enormous number of employees faces difficulties in applying ERP solutions in their organisation. The three-tier architecture is useful in offering an extra layer among the server and clients for streamlining the queries fired from the client to the databases and output send from the databases to the client (Blount et al. 2016). Therefore, from the discussion, I can say that SAP R/3 is based on the technology that has made multiple users to use it without any negative impact on the response time and the processing speed.
Using AI to support knowledge management system in making an active decision:
Artificial intelligence is the technology where the knowledge is shared, captured, developed and transformed into the right format (Inkinen, 2016). On the other hand, the goal of knowledge management is collaborating, sharing, creating or reusing knowledge (Grigoriev et al. 2018). Therefore, I can say from it that the core of AI and KM is knowledge. According to me, AI always allows a machine in acquiring, processing and using knowledge for performing different tasks or unlocking knowledge which can help improve the process of decision making. Therefore, I think that AI offers capabilities and expertise in expanding, using and creating knowledge in different ways that have not yet been imagined so that it can improve decision making.
Big data analytics is one of the parts of artificial intelligence which stores, access and present knowledge in the human readable format so that it can help generate an effective decision making
Importance of spying or monitoring on the online behaviour of the employees:
Tracking the behaviour of employees, from the safety to timesheets has become highly standard practices for businesses (Mohammad et al. 2019). I think that employees are the main asset of an organisation; therefore, if the employee shows negativity towards their organisation in the online medium, then it can create enormous consequences on the target market of the organisation. From that ground, it is ethical to monitor the online activity of employees. When an employee passes a public comment, then there are not any ethical issues as the employees have to give the feedback to show it to others (Tomczak, Lanzo & Aguinis, 2018). Monitoring the online activity of employees is not legal, but if employees use computers or phones in their office hours to pass a comment, then it is not permissible to check the online activity of employees. Otherwise, I think that it is not legal to monitor the online activity of employees.
Spying on the online activities of employees:
If I would become a leader in an organisation, then I would spy on the online movements of employees. This is because; I think that employees are the main stakeholders of an organisation with whom employees can directly communicating. Therefore, if an employee will pass a bad comment about the organisation intentionally or unintentionally, then it can harm the brand image of an organisation (Moussa, 2015). For this reason, it is necessary to check the online activity of the employees and warn them if they show anything unexpected behaviour which can destroy the brand image of organisations.
Examples where employees are caught for immoral online behaviour:
Octavia Nasr who is the editor of CNN has been fired because she was posted a note on the Twitter that expresses the admiration for the late Lebanese cleric which are considered as one of the inspiration for Hezbollah militant movements (Washingtonpost, 2019). Though the editor has apologised for her tweet, it was not recognized by the vice presidents.
If I were vice presidents, I would not fire Octavia, but I would make her apologised in the social media. After that, I would warn Octavia for her activity, and then I would develop better social media policies so that these types of behaviour can be avoided shortly.
Summary:
The above description has made it clearer that management information system is almost effective in every possible sector because record keeping is always necessary in every sector. SAP R/3 is one of the newly developed technologies which has becoming important in almost every sector because it satisfies the present need of the users by making it supportive to multiple OS. The discussion has made it clearer that it is sometimes ethical to spy on the employees to identify any negative comments passed by them which can destroy brand image of organisation
