Students will need to maintain a diary of reflections on your learning experiences during the semester. You will then be required to collate these reflections into an integrated report (3000 words) that utilises theoretical concepts to analyse and interpret what you have learned about yourself and others, and the implications for your future career.

The reflection should also incorporate a key management challenge that you have witnessed or in which you have been involved. Critically reflect on how you could have addressed this problem/s as a manager using the soft and hard skills that you have examined in this subject. You must also submit your journal

Present your findings as a report (3000 words) using the following structure:


  • Cover page: Your name, MGT802 and the title of the report: this should be a concise description of your report
  • Table of contents: list all major sections with page numbers
  • Introduction: Cover the Background (what has come before the report to make it necessary for you to write it?), Aim(s) (what is the main aim(s) of the report?) and Scope (how will you cover this aim(s), discuss sections and what will and won’t be covered).
  • Main body: As mentioned above, in this main section you must utilises theoretical concepts to analyse and interpret what you have learned about yourself and others, and the implications for your future career of the topics and reflections you have journaled during this course. These reflections should incorporate at least one key management challenge that you have witnessed or in which you have been involved. You are required to critically reflect on how you could have addressed this problem/s as a manager using the soft and hard skills that you have examined in this subject. You will need to then make empirically supported recommendations for the board. There need to be regular in-text referencing to support your writing.
  • Conclusion: Using the literature, write a short summary of your findings as well as some concise and practical recommendations for further research on the subject matter discussed in your report.
  • Reference list: use the APA referencing system
  • Appendix: You must submit your journal as an appendices item. There should be reflective entries that cover topics 2 to 13.

  • The report should be in a clear, easy to read font, 12-point size, with 1.15 spacing. Overall presentation should reflect the appropriate business format.

Introduction 

In my course of study, there were several questions or issues arrived that were so relevant and related to a manager in an organization. The aim of the study was to identify the key challenges of a manager, that usually be faced in an organization during the course of work. I have learnt as a manager, how to address those problems in the organization, by applying hard and soft skills that I have studied and examined in the study during my course. In this reflective report, I have mentioned the topics containing managerial issues, with detailed descriptions of how I have learnt and how those issues can be addressed in my future career as a manager.

Main Body

What I have learned about myself and others, and the implications for my future career 

I would like to mention here that the course that I am pursuing, is so practical based and the topics that are there in my syllabus are full of organizational profession based aspects. During the course of my study, I got to know about myself, my strengths, weaknesses, more concretely. I have learnt about my co-learners as well as we had been pursuing the course together. My aim is to obtain a successful career as a manager or any higher post in an organization. From the course, I got to my limitations and the improvements that I need to do for being a successful manager in my future career. In this respect, I need to mention the topics related to the managerial issues from which I was able to identify my limitations and strengths. The topics I have studied ware optimism, work ethics, service orientation & service leadership, emotional intelligence, reliance, creativity, critical thinking, cognitive flexibility & mindfulness, teamwork, leadership, communication, coaching other, copyright disclaimer. I am glad to mention here that my leading capability is good enough that I got to know during the teamwork I did during the course of my study. During the teamwork, several times, I helped my co-learners as well and thus I realised my coaching capability that is highly required to be a good manager. However, there were a few issues regarding my communication with others, which I need to improve for my future career. In this respect, I should mention here that some of my co-learners were significantly appreciable in the communicating style and I learned from them as well. A manager can develop the work culture, environment and make the subordinates favourable for him or her (Ellegaard & Andersen2015). I learnt that from my study. Here innovation plays a vital role in order to tackle any organisational conflict and along with that, adaptation of the situation is required as well (Moore2014). I have learnt how to ease any critical situation in the organisation especially during employee conflict, where negotiation might require, I will be able to minimise the issue by making the work process flexible to the employees that might help them to attain mindfulness in the workplace. Again, I learned how to use emotional aspect by making the subordinates feel that I, as a manager, am always supportive and listing to them. It is a highly beneficial strategy to mitigate any kind of organisational conflicts and hazards.

Key management challenge that I have witnessed and involved during my semester 

During my study of the mentioned topics discussed above, I have personally faced a major issue with conflict management among the employees working in the hospitality organisation. The key challenge was workplace negotiation process that was missing due to various issues and conflicts while I was involved in the process. According to Gibb's reflective cycle, I have learned to evaluate a difficult situation and conduct an analysis process for a further action plan. Based on the understanding of the key challenge that I have witnessed it was identified happened due to lack of management support and strategic decision-making process and appropriate approach of leadership, as I was pursuing my first internship project on contemporary management capabilities and my topic was teamwork and leadership from the topics from two to thirteen. I have addressed a serious challenge in the hotel during my internship session. I was assigned by my professor as an ordinary intern to prepare a project on effective teamwork and leadership management process that can be beneficial for an organisation to develop. Following the instruction of my professor, I have personally chosen a hotel my choice and decided to visit and stay there for a duration of three months.

The first key challenge that I have personally faced was with the receptionist addressed me on the first day of my visit to the hotel. The major challenge from the management of the visited hotel was found to be a lack of coordination between the front line staffs and the back office staffs working in the hotel. In other words, I remembered and focussed on one of the fundamental concern that the negotiation process can be efficient in reducing the conflicts among the workforce of an organisation (Young et al., 2016). Keeping this fact in mind about the authors stated in the Journal of Ecology, I tried to involve with the receptionists for acknowledging the cause of such conflicts and no support for student interns in terms of serving the basic hospitality. Further, I have also met the operations manager responsible for supervising the tasks of the operations and logistics supply. Hence, finally, I could realize the fact that the CEO of the hotel and the middle management has disassociation and detached communication. As a result, I have witnessed that most of the staffs are facing an issue with payment, and so I have been neglected in serving standard service quality.

Critically reflection on how I could have addressed this problem/s as a manager using the soft and hard skills that I have examined in this subject 

The key challenge observed during my intern was a serious problem that I usually hear or read about multiple organisations relevant to the conflict management process. In fact, I have studied several times about the strategic leadership and teamwork in the topics. If I would have been a manager in the chosen Hotel, then using the hard skill of human resource management, I would have first of guided the staffs individually and allocated their respective job role and responsibilities accordingly and systematically for getting the job completed within the specified time. Zeng, Phan & Matsui, (2015) stated that the hard approach of management provides workforce development efficiently in managing operations of an organisation. Agreeing with this statement, I would have discussed the issues of employees to the senior management and arranged the necessary technical support and training facility for the staffs of the employees to feel confident. On the other hand, if I would have approached with soft skills, as a manager then I would have addressed the issues such as communication, leadership, time management and teamwork problems faced by the staff of the chosen hotel. Contrasting with the statement, Carvalho & Rabechini Junior, (2015) opined that the soft skill development process helps in employee motivation and the impact of risk management for an organisational context. In accordance with this argument, I agree here far more than the hard skill approach. The reason is that if being a manager, I would have to address first the reason for lack of communication and conflicts due to cultural differences among the staffs working from different background. According to that, I would have provided the employees' flexibility of working hours and shifts and treated their problems as a good leader and provide them strategic plan and policies that can bring change in the workplace environment. Based on the two types of skills that I have mentioned above, I have understood that if I had been a manager of a hotel, then I would have to change my way of solving problems of employees, as per the situation. Therefore, I could feel that my internship period during my semester was productive and a great learning experience.

Empirically supported recommendations for the board 

As I have already mentioned that the course that I am pursuing, is so practical based and the topics that are there in my syllabus are full of organizational profession based aspects, it helped me a lot to identify the managerial issues and to resolve them with needful strategies. Based on the theoretical knowledge that I learnt during my course I can recommend that any kind of conflict in an organisation, can be mitigated through systemic tragic steps. The main thing I need to keep in my mind that as a manager I should address the issues instead of avoiding it. A manager should confront the challenge indeed of avoiding it (Johansen & Cadmus2016). First communication is highly required in this regard. I, as a manager, need to maintain good and needful communication between all the employees.  According to Darawong et al., (2016) a manager should create an environment in my organisation that would help to promote a healthy collaboration among all. I would take initiatives to make everyone feel that all are being treated fairly, which is so important to mitigate any conflict. Then according to need, the formal complaint process would need to set. 

Conclusion 

Based in that above discussion, I can state that by the help of the course that I am pursuing I got the opportunity to identify my strengths and weaknesses that might affect a lot both positively and negatively in my career in future. As a manager, I require to enrich my communicative quality that would significantly necessary for the organisational aspect. Along with that, the strengths that I have should be polished to achieve more success in my future.
