Task Summary

This assessment task requires you to reflect on your experiences in MIS500 this trimester by following a four-step process to gain insights into the work you have done and how it relates to your

own career and life more broadly. In doing so, you will need to produce a weekly journal to record your learning and then as the trimester comes to a close reflect on these experiences and submit a final reflection of 1500 words (+/- 10%) that will include the weekly journal as an appendices.


This is an individual assignment that tracks your growth as a student of Information Systems over the trimester. It is scaffolded around your weekly learning activities. Completing the activities and seeking input from your peers and the learning facilitator is essential for you to achieve a positive result in this subject. Before you start this assessment, be sure that you have completed the learning activities in all of the modules. This reflective report gives you the opportunity to communicate your understanding of how information systems relate to your career and future.

Task Instructions

  1. During Module 1 – 5, you were ask to produce a weekly journal to record your learnings each week. Based on these weekly journals, please write a 1500 word reflective report about your experience.
  2. You are required to follow the four steps of Kolb’s learning cycle when writing the reflective report.

You will keep a learning journal throughout the trimester. Each week as you complete the learning activities you record your experience in spreadsheet or word document.

A suggested format for the learning journal is as follows:

The next step is to analyse what you have found. Reflective practice is a process of thinking about new experiences with a view of learning. It is a form of personal response to new experiences, situations, events or information. What new knowledge have you gained in response to this exercise? And what does this information mean? You are expected to reflect at a deep level here. This means that it is not just about explaining what you have done in this subject rather it requires you to think about your personal beliefs, your background and the way you perceive the world around you. This reflective report will demonstrate my learning experience in the context of Kolb's learning cycle. Kolb's learning cycle enables individuals to achieve new ideas by evaluating their existing experience (Botelho et al. 2016). This framework consists of four stages that help learners to solve issues, generate decisions and to implement new theories. In the below, I have discussed my learning experience with the help of these four stages of Kolb’s learning cycle:

Concrete experience

In Kolb’s learning cycle, concrete experience is the first stage where a learner deals with new experience (Chiu & Lee, 2019). Concrete experience defines our everyday experience in the professional area or personal areas. In the first module, I gained experience about the importance of agile in the organization and learnt how organizations practise agile in their business (Appendix 1). I learned about the concept of contemporary business and agile practice. I have detailed knowledge about the information system in Business. Learning about information systems will be beneficial for my future career as it is one of the significant areas of business these days. 

In the second module, I have learnt about knowledge management in business and the importance of information systems (Appendix 2). I have achieved vast knowledge about the knowledge management cycle and the role of the knowledge management system in the business. Along with that, I have learnt about different types of knowledge systems such as Tacit, explicit and others. This module helped me to gain knowledge about big data and its utilization in the organization which will be helpful for my future career development. Apart from this, I have gained knowledge about competitive strategy and business information systems. In order to stay competitive in the market, learning about competitive strategy will be useful for me.  

In model 3, I have gained knowledge about the enterprise resource planning system, customer relationship management system, supply chain management system, business intelligence and others (Appendix 3). CRM will help me to maintain the relationship with the customers in business in future and SCM will enable me to maintain the supply chain of the business. 

In module 4, I have gained experience in enterprise architecture such as centralized, decentralized, service-oriented, software-defined and others (Appendix 4). This module will guide me to plan and design the IT of the enterprises to follow the organizational objectives precisely. In module 5, I have learnt about agile and ethical and security issues of information systems (Appendix 5). This learning will be beneficial for me to secure the information system of business in order to avoid unauthorized access to the company websites.  

Reflective observation 

Reflective observations define an individual experience of personal observation (Morris, 2019). During my learning procedure, I have gained vast knowledge of information systems. In the first module, I gained knowledge about the importance of agile in organizations. Technology has brought a revolutionary change in the area of business (Beck et al., 2017). In module 1.2, I have learnt about SMACIT which defines several technologies such as social, mobile, analytics, cloud, internet and others. I understand about the SMACIT as it involves business Analytics. Business analytics knowledge will help me to combine the available data of the organization with several models in order to improve the business decision.

 In module 2, I have learnt about information systems, knowledge management in business organizations. There is a difference between tacit knowledge and explicit knowledge. Tacit knowledge is difficult to transfer to another individual by conversation or writing as it develops in mind (Letmathe & Rößler, 2019). On the contrary, Explicit knowledge is formal knowledge as it can easily be transferred to another individual or can be stored through writing (O’Dwyer et al., 2019). I have gained knowledge about detailed concepts about the knowledge management cycle or KMC. In this module, I have gained knowledge about several types of knowledge management systems and utilizations in the business operations. KMC will help me to store and organize the knowledge of the organization that will be helpful for the employees in future to improve their performance and to improve the productivity of the organization. In the area of business, Big data demonstrates a large volume of data that outpours a business regularly.  

In module 3, I have gained knowledge about different Business information systems. The ERP system will enable me in the future to automate several back-office functions like technology, service and HR. In module 4, I have understood the decision-making system of the organizations. I have found that cloud computing will help me in the area of the decision-making process of my organization. Cloud computing provides opportunities to save data which reduces the cost of the organizations (Stergiou et al., 2018). In module 5, I achieved learning on the security issues of the organizations. Applying this knowledge in future, I can ensure the security of organizations and can avoid the unauthorized access of corporate saboteurs. 

Abstract conceptualization 

The abstract conceptualization of Kolb’s learning cycle enables the learners to generate new ideas or to modify the existing ideas on the basis of the reflective observation (Chiu & Lee, 2019). I have gained many new ideas and knowledge. From the first module, I came to know about the importance of information systems in business which was not known to me previously. In future, I will adopt information systems in business surely in order to develop the business and to gain competitive advantage. Along with that, I have come to know about the SMACIT which is a set of several technologies. I do not have any knowledge in this area, therefore for me, it is a new experience. Analytics, cloud, internet and others will provide substantial benefits which will be helpful for me in order to develop the business. In my future organization, if there is any problem raised in order to maintain the knowledge of the organization, I can apply IS in that case to resolve the issue. In the second module, I received knowledge about KMS, IM and others. KMS allows the organizations to store and share knowledge (Santoro et al. 2018). Learning about the knowledge management system is completely a new thing for me. Knowledge management has several uses in the area of Business. This learning will be helpful as it will enable me to preserve and share the knowledge of my future organization. As information is one of the assets of the organization, therefore, I can use KMS to maintain the business.

The third module helped to gain knowledge about ERP, CRM and BI systems. Through this module, I have come to know that ERP has great importance in business.  It integrates between business functions and business departments by a single system (Costa et al., 2016). I can apply this system in business in future to maintain the business operations smoothly. In module 4, I came to know about the application of information systems in business. As I do not have any vast knowledge about information systems, application of information systems has provided me with new knowledge that will be beneficial to apply information systems properly in business. In the fifth module, I learnt the ethical and security issues of IS in business. I came to know that Security issues are a significant factor in the IT of business. If my future organization faces security issues in the IS, then there is a chance of losing important data of the organization therefore, I need to concentrate on this issue of IS in future. 

Active experimentation 

In the Active experimentation stage, learners apply their new idea with the help of strategic planning (Morris, 2019). Module 1 helped me to learn IS in business which will help me to increase the angle of business in my future organization. For this purpose, I have to understand the business operations of my future organization first. Then, I will be able to implement a proper information system in my organization. The module 2 allowed me to gain knowledge about KMS. I can implement different types of KMS as per the needs of my future organization. For example, I can implement Oracle SCM cloud to maintain the supply chain of my organization. Oracle SCM is used widely by the organizations to manage the supply chain (Kim et al. 2018).

In module 3, I came to know about the importance of ERP in business. In order to implement an ERP system in my business, I have to rectify the areas that need to be developed. Then I can apply to different types of ERP systems as per the needs of my future organization. Apart from this, in module 4, I learnt about the application of IS in business. With the proper implementation of IS in business, I can control the business operations smoothly. Lastly, module 5 provided me with knowledge about the ethical and security issues as evident in the information system of organisations. 


With the help of the four stages of Kolb’s learning cycle, I have discussed the new experience in detail that I have gained from my learning procedure. This will be further used for the future reference as based on several aspects like experiential learning, channelling observations into a theoretical approach and many other learning could be help at the workplace.
