UNIT CODE AND UNIT NAME: MMM132 BUSINESS REPORT FORMAT
This report is all about the analysis of the business environment and its impact on the operation of the organisation. For discussing various facts about the business environment, Royal Children hospital has been considered. The external environment creates an impact on every organisation and RCH is not the exception. For avoiding the external threats and accepting the external opportunity, a better strategy needs to be developed. For improving the services of the hospital, it is necessary for the hospital in implementing technologies so that it can enhance person-centred care. There are different stakeholders in every organisation with various levels of interests. For securing a better performance in the organisation, it is also necessary for the organisation in considering the interests of the stakeholders so that the interests of the stakeholders can be satisfied. This report offers a brief knowledge of different stakeholders and their interest level in the organisation. Every organisation must take participation in ethics and social responsibility. RCH also has a good focuses on developing CSR. This report offers a brief knowledge about the CSR and ethical considerations applied by RCH. For handling the operational process of RCH with efficiencies, the involvement of a good manager is always necessary because they are associated with checking every type of operation of the organisation and improving it as per the requirement so that quality healthcare can be provided to the customers.
The report is about analysing the business environments and their impact on organisational operations about the Royal Children's Hospital (RCH) in Melbourne. Business environmental forces have a direct and significant impact on the organisation, its services and decision-making.
The RCH is known for offering excellent care for the children and their family members of Victoria for more than 140 years. It is the acute specialist paediatric hospital of Vitoria, and its care covers children of Southern New South Wales, Tasmania and other federations of Australia and abroad. The vision of the organisation is becoming the leading children's hospital (Rch, 2019b).
The purpose of the report lies in identify and analysing the environmental factors influences the strategic decision-making and organisational activities of RCH. The study involves investigating the general environment and the effect of technology on the organisation. Next, it evaluates the influence of advocacy group followed by the impact of ethics and social responsibility on RCH. Lastly, it focuses on identifying the four primary skills needed for becoming an efficient manager.
Task 1: General environment of RCH and the effect of technology
The global climate covers the critical place of directing the corporate activity based on the needs of the society including all the public forces such as social, political, legal, environmental, technological and economical with long-term and direct action on a company. It reflects the overall trends and conditions in the community in which the firm operates. The complexity and dynamics of the general environment lead to changes in the whole exercises of the organisation. It can result in a disruption in operations, with several consequences, both inside and in the parts in which they act. As the components, which are linked to the external environment of organisation do not change concurrently in a similar direction and with the equal force, the impact activated on these things is diverse. The effects of companies and their general environment are mutual. The former affects the environment through their products and services while the external environment influence firms (Muscalu et al. 2016). Therefore, for improving the adeptness and effectiveness of firms, the managerial decisions must consider the previously mentioned interdependence. According to Njoroge et al. (2016), the general environment of a company has a positive influence on organisational performance. Stakeholder mapping has most likely resulted in favourability of connection; thus the positive impact of the public environment. It must not affect corporate performance harmfully if organisations respond promptly to the changing nature of the general environment.
Here, for example, the technological factors can be taken into account that influenced the performance of RCH positively. RCH is a cutting-edge hospital for children that has a whole variety of paediatric services, a protuberant position as the national-wide trauma centre. The organisation obtains fund from the government for liver and cardiac transplantation projects. It indicates the level of technological advancement within the hospital. The organisation is committed to developing its facilities and making them more bolstering for service users and their families by advanced care planning (Williams et al. 2017). It helps to create more children surviving from a chronic medical condition. Further, RCH uses the science park environment for bathing children in sunlight that enable them to have fresh air while playing outdoors (Rch, 2019c).
Australia spends significantly on technological innovation that supports the growth of specific technology-based industries effectively (Williams et al. 2017). Consequently, the RCH is the first Australian hospital to reach the International Best Practice for Digital Health. Modern technology redesigning care and services for children with complex health conditions and it is enhancing end-to-end digital practice for children. Any medical service provider can access a single and real-time view of the entire journey of the patient and the interchange between disciplines. Moreover, for improving the effectiveness and transparency of patient recordkeeping, the organisation developed a new patient portal for making the partnership between patients' families and clinicians. It increases the ability of the hospital delivering patient-centred care for improving the overall quality and reputation of RCH (Ststephenshospital, 2019). Thus, RCH applies technology for improving the care and treatment of all children specifically those having chronic disorders needing care from several specialists. It offers clinicians a complete view of the consideration required of a patient and the attention he/she receives. Hence, technology as a general environment or external environment brought positive changes and outcomes for RCH.
Task 2: Specific environment of RCH and the impact of the advocacy group
The specific situation is also known as the task environment that refers to the organisations and forces outside of a company with which the firm edges while conducting its corporate activities. Such factors are pertinent to the attainment of business goals directly, as they have an immediate and direct effect on actions and decisions taken by the manager. The specific environment of every organisation is distinctive and changes by conditions (Williams et al. 2017). The crucial elements of task environment include suppliers, customers, pressure groups and competitors (Berry and Wilcox, 2018). Grant (2014) commented that clients and customers of a company are the people and firms that buy its products and services. Suppliers are the organisations and people, who supply raw materials to the business. Competitors are the companies offering similar goods and services for capturing market share and customers of the company. Next comes the advocacy group or pressure group. They are the special-interest groups trying to influence organisational activities. Such groups have the ability to corporate success. Hence, managers need to be careful in their actions and decisions. For example, PETA’s or People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals as created pressure on restaurants in terms of their process of handling animals at the time of the slaughter process. The influence of advocacy groups changes with the change in political and social attitudes. Thus, organisations need monitoring the main modifications in the community continuously.
Similarly, for performing efficiently within the healthcare industry, RCH needs work under the pressure of advocacy groups such as the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency and Health Council (Williams et al. 2017). For instance, the AHPRA is accountable for the registration and authorisation of 10 health professions in Australia. Thus, it can inspect complaints related to conducting, performance and health of a registered health practitioner. Under this advocacy group, all the medical practitioner in RCH are bound to perform their duties efficiently so that no complaints are filed against them regarding professional misconduct, notifiable contact and unprofessional conduct (Lawhandbook,2019). Hence, RCH requires providing necessary training to the practitioners. So that their performance can meet quality standard and expectation. Besides, the Australia Patient Safety Foundation is another advocacy group that influence RCH to promote the safety of children through education, research and reporting incident.
Further, the organisation needs following the NSQHS (The National Safety and Quality Health Service) Standards pertain to the quality of care and recordkeeping. This is aimed at protecting people from harms and enhancing their quality of care services. It guides healthcare organisations reviewing the availability of patent records during care. Further, organisations also need maintaining privacy n confidentiality of patient information (Nationalstandards, 2019). Thus, the RCH requires following the described care level and installing the systems that are needed for delivering quality care. It needs providing training to the practitioners regarding the use of electronic recordkeeping and the process of maintaining digital health records for ensuring that they are unswerving with excellent practice and law.
Task 3:Concept of Ethics and social responsibility and RCH
Ethics and social responsibility incorporate the areas of moral decision-making, principles, governance problems and codes of conduct for an organisation. It involves a general displacement linked to prodigious experience appearing when things are inappropriate. It consists of judging a business by action that is morally permissible and not by efficiency. Thus, ethics are a set of principles accomplished by a company and a formless concept hard to organise. The stakeholder theory of CSR that draws its attitude from ethics supports that companies are morally accountable to take care of the apprehensions of a full group of stakeholders including customers, employees, vendors and the community instead of its stockholders, who are the owners of the business only (Goel and Ramanathan, 2014). Thus, the concept of ethics and SR have diverse identities. Hitherto, they are used often for referring to the same code or argument. Hence, the terms’ SR and ethics is supposed to be an assortment of two terms including business and ethics. In the words of Argandona (2016), SR in the industry of healthcare can acquire enormously from the development of the CSR (corporate social responsibility) concept. Health care institutions can enjoy a high standard of social recognition, derived from the value of the requirement they satisfy, the human and technical calibre of their professionals and their support to the welfare of the community. Thus, the SR and ethics are highly crucial for healthcare organisations, as unethical deeds can affect the human being and the community directly in a negative way.
For meeting its corporate social responsibility, RCH has developed the Research Ethics and Governance or REG that is focused on supporting researches that enhance the health and security of young people and children. This department supervises investigations, which are carried out in or by the Children’s Campus at Melbourne. The campus contains the RCH, University of Melbourne Department of Paediatrics and Murdoch Children's Research Institute. The primary objectives of this department include:
- Protecting rights, safety and independence of research participants
- Facilitating top-quality research by supporting researches
It shows that the RCH is aware of its roles and responsibilities toward the community and its children (Williams et al. 2017). Therefore, it is committed consistently on improving the health condition of the young people, who are the future of the country.
For facilitating the achievement of the objectives, REG conducts several activities those are:
- Maintaining the ethical appraisal system of research projects
- Maintaining the governance, called the location-specific sanction of research projects
- Offering timely advice to the researcher regarding research ethics
- Helping researcher in meeting regulatory standards, managing risks and developing policies
Al the research activities in RCH need ethical approval from a certified Human Research Ethics Committee and governance approval given by the REG (Rch, 2019a).
The high ethical activities and researches conducted by the RCH validate the focus of the organisation toward fulfilling ethical responsibilities. The investigations help developing the clinical products and services offered to young children, who are suffering from long-term diseases and medical conditions. Hence, it supports children to live a long healthy life.
Task 4: Responsibilities of the manager and four different skills that are required to perform the job of the manager:
Health and social care organisation offers a quality patient service with the help of doctors, diagnostic technicians, nurses and others (Williams et al. 2017). For achieving profitability, a health and social care business also handles the administrative tasks such as human resource, budgeting and managing supplies (Kempenich et al. 2015). The role of managers varies in the health and social care organisation as per the functions and titles. The manager that is mainly required in RCH is the hospital administrators who are one of the middle-level managers in the hospital.
RCH hospital is involved in offering health and wellbeing of the children and adolescent (Rch, 2019b). Therefore, for delivering excellent healthcare services, hospital administrators are associated with performing different responsibilities.
- The primary responsibility of the hospital administrators is serving as the liaison among the governing board, managers of different departments and medical staff of RCH.
- A hospital administrator is also associated with organising, coordinating and controlling the services as per the regulation developed by the hospital board.
- Evaluating different personnel working in a hospital and preparing the daily report is another responsibility of the hospital administrator of RCH.
- A hospital administrator is also involved in assisting the recruitment, screening, and consenting and enrolment process of personnel (Ahmad et al. 2013). A hospital administrator is also engaged in authorising the admission or treatment of the children as per the agreed protocol of the organisation.
- A hospital administrator is also involved in ensuring that stock levels in RCH are sufficient to treat a particular patient and orders can be made at the right time (Williams et al. 2017).
- Sterilising the instruments as per OSHA requirements and performing the entire duties as per HIPAA regulations are other duties of hospital administrators.
- Accurate and timely documentation of the visits of a patient is another responsibility of hospital administrators (Ahmad et al. 2013).
- Communicating the medical results with the parents of children under clinical supervision is one of the critical responsibilities of hospital administrators.
Therefore, for performing these responsibilities, the four skills that are required by hospital administrators are
- Excellent communication skills
- Good knowledge about the medical terminology, ICD and CPD coding and HIPAA regulations
- Critical thinking skill
- Problem-solving skills
Therefore, for achieving the managerial job, it is necessary to make the skills mentioned above. Excellent communication skill can be achieved with the help of more practice (Ahmad et al. 2013). However, the learner can also conduct a short-term internet-based course for making a better communication skill. In that case, the evidence can be the certificate of the course.
For achieving a better knowledge about the medical terminology, HIPAA regulations and CPD and ICD coding, a bachelor degree in the hospital administrations are highly important with CPR certifications (Kempenich et al. 2015). Therefore, the evidence of the knowledge can be degree certificate and CPR certifications.
Critical thinking and problem-solving skills can be achieved by handling more emergencies in RCH. However, there are varieties of offline courses that are available to improve both the problem solving and critical thinking skills; therefore, the evidence of the achievement of this skill can be the certificate after completion of the course successfully.
Business environment including general and specific or task environment has a direct impact on the functions of a company. Businesses cannot control external forces. However, they can respond accordingly to avoiding adverse effects. A global environment such as the technical condition of a country like Australia played a crucial role in developing the operations and service quality of RCH. If the state lacks technological development, then it might have affected the efficiency of RCH negatively, as it would not have been successful in providing high-quality services to the children.
Further, the specific environment includes several influencers like customers, competitor and more and advocacy group are one of them. In the case of RCH, the AHPRA, Australia Patient Safety Foundation and NSQHS create their pressure for continuous improvement. Besides following thee regulations, RCH also invests in ethical research for inventing the best way of supporting children and helping them to live longer. For handling the performance in the RCH with efficiencies, involvement, a hospital administrator is highly essential so that it can help the hospital ion offering excellent quality of healthcare services.
