Ace chemical company is an Australian company. Offering some best quality of cleaning products and disinfectants this company got all the fame for its chemical goods. Their mission statement is to offer quality items with safe service and items that won't harm the environment. Information about the area of the company is not available. An average of 200 employees with an average age group of 35 to 40 works in this company. These employees have a two years minimum experience in the field of chemical business. They also belong to substantial socio-economic status. Most of the employees are males except few female employees handling the office work. An average shift of 8 hours has to be filled by the employees. The company follows the code of practice and regulations ISO9000: 2000 and HACCP: Licence No: Q0003) very carefully resulting in less emergency.
2. Industrial Hazards and Associated Risk
2.1 Risk Identification
Something that can cause harm is called a hazard. According to OHSAS, Anything that can potentially capable cause harm in terms of physical harm such as injuries in the workspace, damage to the workspace property, harm to the environment or any compound of these is known as Hazard (van Leeuwen and Vermeire, 2007). In order to prevent accidents happening in the workplace identification of Hazard or Hazard Recognization is essential. A proper way to control hazard can be identified after recognizing the characteristics and properties of hazard (Matteini, et.al., 2018). Though we all overlook the hazard recognization often. There are several reasons exploring that the updating the hazard identification is necessary. Mostly hazards are classified into four ways.
The obvious hazard: Hazards that are clearly visible such as damaged machinery or mechanical equipment
The concealed hazard: These hazards are not clearly visible such as electricity and presence of noxious gases.
The developing hazard: Hazards that are not visible from the start but can develop over time
The transient hazard: They are just the temporary hazards
2.2 Risk Assessment
To create an easy process of identifying the hazards in a company following activities are needed to be recorded. By recording activities such as tasks which are involved in those activities aspects of plant or materials that are used.
Making a list of potential hazards that can occur in the workplace is vital. After making a list all the hazards can be evaluated individually
Starting with the identification of hazards in the workplace, which involves finding those things that potentially cause harm in the workplace.
At the starting of a job, task or activity a work Permit is issued which includes a checklist and some questions that are needed to be given to assure that identification of the hazard has made. Usually this checklist contains the analysis of toxic gas (such as carbon monoxide, H2S), oxygen
supply, the concentration of flammable gas, etc (Crowl and Louvar, 2001).
2.3 Risk Evaluation
The primary evaluation process includes the reviewing of every label as well as SDS of all precarious chemicals and also involves the assessment of available and needed control means (Sorensen, 2002). To explain, a suitable control measure is needed to be done if the label or SDS of any chemical points that the use of the chemical can cause a skin reaction or make a toxic substance when mixed with other chemicals. Using a protective piece of cloth, masks, and gloves is considered as a suitable control action in this case.
Other than this, the general evaluation includes the assessment of any particular task and area or job in the workplace. For example, the company evaluates chemicals on the basis of their properties, risks, and any other potential hazards.
A detailed evaluation is essential if chemical includes the risk of cancer as a result in future.

It is stated under the regulation 51-52, A person managing a business must control the risk to health and safety connected with a hazardous work atmosphere or an ignition source in the workplace. Therefore, in case of fire, it is crucial for the senior authorities to know the source of fuel, a source of oxygen along with the source of ignition.
According to the “Section 47 and Section 48," Work Health Safety needs that one needs to consult with the workers of the companies concerning the safety and health concern that may directly affect the workplace. Under these same sections, a representative must be appointed for the consultation if required.
Under “Regulation 351” and “Regulation 32-38”, Companies employer is responsible for managing safety at the workplace by utilizing the process of hierarchy of risk control.
To maintain a record of hazardous chemicals and Schedule 11 harmful chemicals in the industry comes under the regulation 346 and regulation 347.
The regulation 44 and 46 make sure that the use Personal Protective Equipment is made and guides to provide learning and training about them.
According to the regulation 39, the employer needs to deliver adequate information, training and instructions to all the workforce on the nature of the job and its control actions that are needed to implant so that all the necessary information and training can be provided to the employees.
4. CONTROL MEASURES
Company has several methods of control that are listed from the minimum level of protection and minimum reliability. This type of listing is called the hierarchy of control and includes many approaches such as isolation, substitution, implementing new design and official controls by using PPE.
The most effective method of control is simply by controlling the hazards at the source by removing the hazard. When work processes are still at the planning stage, it is essential to eliminate hazards at the development stage to maintain the health and safety of the system. For example, Safety needs to be the main priority when buying the new machinery and not the cost.
The company prefers to buy pre-mixed and diluted chemicals so that there is no requirement of mixing chemicals manually that will simply help to avoid the chances of accidents and injuries in the workplace. That's why elimination of the hazard is one of the best hazard control activities.
Substitution is the method of replacing the toxic gas or work system from which the hazard cannot be eliminated completely. In case the hazard arising from the use of particular chemical or work process cannot be eliminated completely, the method of substitution is simply taken into consideration. Finding a chemical that is safe to use is not easy as there is no chemical which is considered as the safe chemical. Evaluating current and past reports on the use of chemicals is needed to be done as it is not necessary that if the chemical used in today's time is safe considered safe in future as well.
With the help of isolation process separating some specific chemicals can be done by maintaining a distance, keeping the proper barriers and by installing a closed system near the workers of the company.
Various devices and other processes that support in restricting the area of contamination during any spills are the part of Engineering controls (Ellenbecker, 1996). The current engineering control involves a fully confined booth of ventilation and a confined exhaust to grab any airborne contaminants. Open doors, windows, and ceiling are the natural ventilation that are used to catch dust, fumes, and gases.
By limiting the time a worker exposed to the hazardous place the method administrative controls works. The method of administrative control makes sure that the hazardous environment and the toxic chemicals won’t effect the work place and the efficiency of the work environment.
Following are the examples of administrative controls method:
- changing work calendars such as allowing two people to work for five hours each at a job rather than allowing one person to work working for ten hours straight at the job;
- giving workers more extended periods to rest or smaller work shifts to decrease exposure time to the hazardous environment;
- shifting the area of the hazardous work process to some place where less people will get exposed it the hazardous environment;
- changing a work process to a shift when fewer people are working;
PPE or Personal protective equipment
Considered as the least efficient method to control hazards in the workplace Personal protective equipment are only used when all the other methods failed in controlling the hazards.
PPE can be hard and can result in the decreased work efficiency. Use of Personal protective equipment can itself give rise to new health and safety hazards. For instance, the ear protectors can make the worker unable to hear essential warning signals, and respirators make it harder to breathe in the work environment. Personal Protective Equipment of the company includes footwears, glasses that offers chemical resistivity and respirators that together help in the prevention of any hazard from occurring
5. MANAGEMENT PLAN
To identify all the risks arising because of the chemical hazards assessment of the workplace is needed to be done correctly. Later the list of hazards will be prepared which will include all the possible hazardous chemicals. This list will also include the different methods that are needed to be applied to use, handle or store the hazardous chemical.
SDS-Preparing the Safety Data Sheets given it to any person, who is expected to get affected by the toxic chemicals are required. This sheet will contain all the information related all the harmful chemicals. This information may be the simple labeling on the chemicals such as Flammable Chemical. Other than that this list also displays advice such as instructions to store, physiochemical characteristics will be written on this Safety Data Sheets.
Training- Necessary training will be provided which will consider the maintenance, application and implementation various methods of control measures and it will also include the advice to select, use, store and maintain the Protective Personal Equipment. In order to monitor the effectiveness of health management system evaluating the total number of employees taking any medication for maladies that are caused by exposing to the hazardous environment is necessary.
Before starting utilizing the equipment into operation, inspection of equipment is made. The inspection process of the equipment is a planned and organized way to check the overall condition of the equipment.
Suggestion Method- With the help of Suggestion Method, the suggestions of potential hazards and their control that are involved in a job, task or activity are provided. Employees share their previous work experience of working in the industry to propose the hazard and its control (Vinodkumar, and Bhasi, 2009).
Safety Petrol- Every worker can do safety Patrol in the plant site and not only the people, who are in charge of health and safety. Safety patrol can be done anytime such as plant operation, equipment running, plant closed down or any other time when need of patrol seems necessary to recognize the hazard.
Visual Inspections- Visual inspection is the simplest way to identify the hazard by simply making a visual inspection of the workplace (Vinodkumar and Bhasi, 2010). Visually inspecting the workers when they are involved in a task to identify the hazard can be done by doing the visual inspection of the handling loads, chemicals used or types of equipment used. This method might also help in observing if the workers are performing their daily tasks and the activities to avoid hazard such as set-up, cleaning, operation, maintenance and examining. This will present the chance to observe whether the employees follow the predetermined procedure of performing a task or they lack work efficiency by taking shortcuts
It can bé concluded that being a chemical company, Risk is high and an effective occupational health assessment plan is very significant. The organization is already doing appreciating working in the field of risk control in working site. The company is fullfilling regulatory requirement and has strong health assessment plan at workplace.
