Coursework Assessment Guidance
1. Aims and learning outcomes
Aim: This course aims to examine the concepts of health promotion and behaviour change and their theoretical underpinnings. It aims to locate them within individual, community and structural domains to enable students to learn and gather evidence around various strategies of health promotion. It will also enable students to apply theory to the practical implementation of health promotion and behaviour change interventions relevant to employment-based activities.
Learning outcomes assessed by this assessment:
2. Rationale for assessment
This assessment enables students to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of both behaviour change and health promotion theory and how these two disciplines overlap. It will also help to develop student’s critical analysis skill of complex ‘real life’ situations through the use of a global health promotion strategy, intervention programme, policy or campaign of the students choosing. The assessment will also help to build writing skills.
3. Guidelines for the assessment
Students are required to write a critique of the health promotion strategy, policy, intervention programme or campaign they have chosen to focus on. This should include an evaluation of the behaviour change theory that has been used and the approach to health promotion that has been employed. The student will need to include the following in their work:
Structure
You may want to use the guide below to help structure your work:
250 words - Introduction
200 words – Strategy description and justification (providing context)
650 words – A critique of global health promotion targets in relation to your chosen strategy
650 words – A critical evaluation of the approach to health promotion used for your chosen strategy including the social, cultural and ethical appropriateness of it in this situation
250 words – Conclusion
Introduction – State briefly what you are going to cover in the body of your essay and the way in which you intend to present your information. Your introduction should be a one short paragraph.
Main body of your essay / information – Here is where you present your information. This should form the bulk of your critique. Each separate issue you want to raise should be written as a new paragraph. You can include several related points within each paragraph.
You need to critically examine how theoretical perspectives and policies and or strategies work together and are implemented. You will also need to identify which behaviour change and health promotion theories underpin your chosen strategy and explain why you think this is the case.
