Project management body of knowledge (PMBOK) is a set of standards under which the project is managed effectively. The project management defines how the plan are made and executed within defined limits (Meredith, Mantel and Shafer, (2017). In the first section of the report, I have showcased the insights that I have developed during the trimester. I have managed to understand the leadership skills that are required to take the organization further. In the second part I analyzed the case study of SingularLogic with the assistance of Gagne’s learning theory.

Insights developed during the trimester

The learning during the trimester have developed vivid insights regarding the concept of the project management in me. My knowledge about the concept is honed greatly in this trimester. PMBOK is a group of standards that is an abbreviation for Project Management Body of Knowledge. Project management is a planned process as defined by PMBOK in which following five steps are stated (Brioso, (2015):

  • Initiating the plan
  • Planning
  • Executing
  • Controlling and monitoring
  • Closing

The importance of the steps is realized when the company enables to attain the profitability and the set objectives. The procedures and methodologies which I learnt are of great importance as they differently characterize the organization from other competing organizations. Robert and Ralph (2015), in their paper described the vitality of the project management methodologies for carrying out the projects. They concluded that the project management establishes a strong base and eliminates the chances of failure greatly. The project management is made available in academics because there are surplus benefits of it. Many research studies have shown that academics can imbibe a great knowledge of the project management in the students so that they can exploit it in their careers. Therefore, I also learned the benefits of the project management. The benefits of project management are that they enables the managers to outline a project within the available resources like raw material, workers, transportation, etc. There are always time constraints because the trends of the market and human behavior are rigorously changing (Keleckaite & Meiliene, (2015). Therefore, with an effective management, the supplies of the product can match the pace of the upgrading trends of the market. The paper published by Samir, Alexander and Greg, (2018), mentioned that an effective management team plays an important role in reducing the pressure of budgeting and deliveries on time. Further benefits of the project manager that I have learned are:

  • Desired results can be achieved
  • Set scope, budget and schedule for the project
  • Productivity along with quality is improved
  • Customer satisfaction is achieved
  • A competitive advantage is gained over other organizational firms.

In this trimester, I also came across the various principles of the project management which includes vision, mission, objective, planning, execution, organization alignment and accountability (Akdeniz, (2015). Different approaches are also taken by organizations to tackle the organizational issues. For example, big organizations like Apple use the Six Sigma approach which is an effective approach of project management (Colin & Vanhoucke, (2015). The principles and approaches are the guidelines that can be used to boost the success of the company.

I further developed the knowledge about how the project management can attenuate the underlying risks. Gantt chart is a widely used tool to assess the risks and manage them. Along with it, organizations use Logic network, PERK chart, work and product breakdown system. These tools are used as planning tools because the competitive market is not the place for hit and trial methods. It is realized that the success of the project is dependent on the skilled leader of the company. therefore, project management is led by the skilled project managers to overcome the hindering factors existing in the market. The skills that are exhibited by the project leaders are (Mehrabani & Mohamad, (2015):

  • Communication
  • Planning
  • Decision making
  • Motivate the employees
  • Experienced and insightful

Having these skills, the project managers control and manage the employees to achieve the set goals. The attainment of the objectives therefore, can only be attained if the company have such skilled managers. For instance, the organization like Nike were once the small start ups that are today flourishing in the market. The reason behind the growth is the effective project managers and their management.

Advantages of learning through the case study

In this section I have described my learnings about the company SingularLogic by associating it with the Gagne’s condition of learning. The theory states the conditions of learning in the classroom which are (Sreelakshmi et al, (2015):

  1. Gain attention
  2. Information of the objective
  3. Recalling prior learning
  4. Learning guidance
  5. Practice
  6. Assess performance
  7. Enhance retention

I associated this theory of learning with provided case study to develop the informative attitude towards the company. The first part of the theory is to gain the attention on what has to be learned or defining an aim that what information needs to be procured from the module. The first part of the case study gave an overview and background of the company. I learnt that the SingularLogic is a software company which was established in 1984 in Greece. This company is a leader in the software market and displays a good share with numerous stakeholders. The second step in the theory is to attain information of the objective. The aim is to filter the vital learnings that are provided in the module. The company has showcased number of features. For instance, the company has a workforce of skilled professional employees who are the drivers of the business success. O’Neill and Rachel, (2016), published their paper where the importance of the competent workforce was explained. They concluded that the presence of a competent workforce has competitive advantages over other firms. This is because the workforce can exploit the strategies to achieve the project and overall organizational goals. Moreover, the R&D function of the company is determined to deliver the best products in the market by acting as the interface between the customer needs and innovations.

The next step in the theory is to recall the previous learnings to relate the newly studied information. This helps in grasping the overall knowledge. For instance, earlier in 2006 the company was flourishing as it made a revenue of €65 millions. This knowledge is the foundation to outline the projects for the future. The project management then can act to achieve elevated goals. The developed insights regarding the company can be retained by practicing again and again. Moreover, by assessing the performance of the company, the managers can analyze the threats and opportunities in the organization. It is realized that the R&D of the company can be made more organized to supply the effective products and services. To ensure the functionality of the R&D department, the firm assigns the top decision makers. The decisions can divert the path of the organization towards the success. The company can adopt the theory of strategy (Zollo, Minoja & Coda, (2018). The theory states that by analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of the company, the managers can employ strategies and execute them to achieve successful result (Gray, (2015). Therefore, the company decides the priorities of the research and development department on yearly basis. The last stage of learning theory is how one can retain the knowledge. The case study turned out to be a great help to me for understanding the concepts of project management. I adapted successfully to the teachings I acquired from the case study by the help of Gagne’s condition learning.
