The project delivery system is a necessary requisite in the complex business community of today. However, it is noted that, there are certain limitations and shortcomings that may hinder the execution of the project plan or create any other contingencies. Thus, in certain cases it becomes the responsibility of the project manager to adopt additional measures in order to ensure success of the project. The major drawbacks of the project delivery system are listed below:

  • Less control: One of the major drawbacks of the project delivery system is less control in the hands of the project owner. It is evident that, the project plan is handed over to the contractor and the owner tends to lose his control over the execution of the project. It may happen that the contractor may not comply with all the specifications as provided by the owner and may carry out the project according to his or her own plan. 
  • Need for early requirement definitions: It is very important to give proper and clear specifications of the project plan to the contractor. The design that is to be made, the way the plan is to be executed, and other requirements are to be clearly specified to the contractor. 
  • Compliance issues: It may happen that the contractor may not comply with all the requirements of the owner. This tends to create ambiguity at the time of delivery of the project. 
  • Payment issues: Usually, it is noted that, there is payment bond that describes all the terms related to the payments. However, it is noted that, there may arise certain disputes among the owner of the project and the contractor regarding the payments periods in case of partial payments (Zeng et al. 2014).
