In this assignment, you will be provided a scenario (problem) involving a public health leader that you will need to analyse using the knowledge gained from this subject for 3 modules. Subsequently, immersing yourself in the scenario, you will evaluate yourself as a public health leader. (Note: Scenario will be provided after Module 2).

You will be writing a 2000‐word report in three parts, as follows:

Part 1: Analyse the scenario of the public health leader, presented in the Australian public health context using the Australian Health Leadership Framework [ 1000 words ]

In every field, leadership holds an important aspect and therefore, due to that reason, it is one of the most respectful factors that is abided by in an organization. There are certain skills required by an efficient leader and thus, it is those skills which make a difference between a good leader and a bad leader. As far as public health is considered, leadership is one of the indispensable factors that the sector abides by and there is a great demand for that. Certain skills and factors are there which distinguish a leader from a manager. When a leader is serving a public health organization, it is essential that he possesses the necessary skill set for serving the well being and health of a wider mass of people. The purpose of the current research is to discuss the several aspects of leadership in compliance with approaches, framework and tools of leadership. Moreover, I shall also conduct an analytical process on myself in order to understand the leadership skills in me and implement the necessary changes for creating betterment and development.

Part 1

In compliance with the Australian leadership framework, it can be stated that the important aspects of leadership as per the framework are led self, shaping system, drives innovation, achieves outcome, engages others in the opinion of Ward (2016), the first factor is the awareness of the leader of his capabilities and strengths. The awareness of the leader would help him do his activities better and thus, he would build confidence in terms of the things that he can. The provided case study shall be taken into consideration in this regard where Helen has undertaken initiatives for the betterment of the lives of the people who do not include young aged people or children only. This took place because Helen was determined regarding the steps that she needed to take for overcoming the issues in the public health sector. As influenced by Ho, Clarke and Dougherty (2015), it can be stated that she was aware of her skills, owing to which she took initiatives for the well being of the people and the communities. Moreover, another aspect of leads self is trustworthy, honesty and integrity. This shall also be witnessed in the leadership character of Helen where she has been ethical and thought about the well being of the people, instead of focusing on her own skills. In that way, she has been extremely honest and thus, has gained the integrity of the people.

The second factor is in terms of engagement with others. As stated by Fleetwood (2017), this factor is associated with teamwork and collaboration. However, in accordance with this, it can be witnessed that this skill was missing in Helen. When a leader aims to work in public health for the betterment of the lives of the people, he needs to work as part of a team. In this context, communication is one of the core essential factors as that allows smooth flow of information and there is a mutual sharing of knowledge, idea which helps build that trust. Communication is hugely important when it comes to engaging others in a public healthcare organization. As commented by Langer et al. (2015), communication must include both verbal and nonverbal skill as that primarily allows the leader to share his views and the later helps the leader to have the idea of the other members and develop that bond. In addition to that, it is also important that value and dignity is being provided to each of the individuals associated with the public healthcare sector which would help gain their confidence and thus, it would lead to the smooth flow of the works done in the public health sector for the betterment of the health and living conditions of the people. 

Furthermore, as per the Australian framework, it is also important that leaders must also work towards the achievement of the outcome for his specific organization that he is working in. For that purpose, collaboration with the consumers as well as with the colleagues is important as that would account into understanding the opinion of each of the members (Houmanfar et al. 2015). It can be evidenced in the provided case study that this leadership trait was hugely prevalent in the character of Helen. She was clear on the aims and objectives that she needed to achieve being a part of the organization. However, there was ineffectiveness in her teamwork and collaborative skills which shall be determined by her working with a lesser number of stakeholders. Therefore, in that regard, she has been somewhat inefficient as a leader. Along with that, as per the framework, it could also be noticed that driving innovation is an important trait of a leader. Therefore, as influenced by Rundall et al. (2016), in order to cater to innovation, a leader shall also need to rely upon his members and colleagues and gain their knowledge as the idea of everyone shall constitute into the formulation of an effective innovation strategy. However, the dearth of Helen in working with an adequate number of stakeholders is evident in the fact that she lacks creativity and innovation. Along with that, it can also be evidenced by the case study that she did not indulge in an effective communication process much with her consumers and co-workers. As reported by Reynolds (2017), in public health communication is one of the key indicators of the well being of the organization which shall ultimately reflect onto the fulfillment of the aims and objectives of the organizations. However, the leadership skill of Helen is totally contradictory to this. Despite having the determination and strong will for the betterment of the lives of the people in terms of their health and well being, she was not effective in good decision making process which is one of the most important traits of the character of a leader. A leader must always work towards problem solving and decision making efficiently because that would culminate into the smooth flow of work in the organization and therefore, helps achieving the objectives. 

Part 2

On the basis of the self assessment tool, I conducted an analysis of myself which showed the prevalence of the leadership skills in me and thus, I have been able to fully understand myself and the extent to which I shall be an effective leader. As influenced by Gatzweiler et al. (2017), I have witnessed that the strengths in me are primarily my communication skill. Communication skill is an integral part that plays a major role in a wider number of fields. Henceforth, wherever I am in, I always pay attention to the fact that I deliver my information and knowledge well. Moreover, I always ensure that the people I am working with also avail adequate opportunities of sharing their views and opinion. That would allow a two way communication process and thus, effective decision shall be taken under any circumstance. As per the test result, I witnessed that there is good problem solving skill in me. This is due to the indulgence of me into communication process and apart from speaking; I also put emphasis on listening skills. Moreover, I agree to the result of the test to a great extent. This is because of me being able to work in difficult situations with much ease and being calm. This is also an important trait of the behavioral aspect of a leader. As influenced by Stephan et al. (2016), I became able to understand myself better as a result of conducting the test and thus, I have understood that there is presence of certain leadership skills in me. 

Moreover, the result showed much positivity in me than negativity. Even if there were certain negative aspects in my professional and leadership behavior, that would act as a force of advantage for me to reinforce certain steps for overcoming those and constitute into the betterment of my professional behavior. While working with a public healthcare organization, I would focus more on the implementation of my positive professional behavior. That would result into the fulfillment of the objectives that my organization has. Moreover, I have also witnessed that the fulfillment of the aims and objectives of the organization I work with is also a significant factor that I pay much attention to. To me, the development of me is important, along with which I pay more attention to the betterment and development of the organization I am associated with which shall take place with the achievement of the overall aims of the organization. Furthermore, it is also worth mentioning that leaders must always put emphasis on the aims and objectives that his organization has (Jones et al. 2016). Along with that, another important trait of leadership in me is the presence of ethics and honesty.  I always look forward to that fact that whenever I am working with certain individuals including both consumers and colleagues, I provide value to them and they get equal opportunity to share their ideas and viewpoint as me. Henceforth, the leadership style that I follow is ethical integration and providing value to people. 

Part 3

I have seen that the qualities in me are fundamentally my communication expertise. Communication ability is an fundamentally portion that plays the major part in a more extensive number of areas. From this time forward, wherever I am in, I continuously pay consideration to the reality that I convey my data and information well. Besides, as opined by Rundall et al. (2016), I continuously guarantee that the individuals I am working with moreover profit satisfactory openings of sharing their sees and conclusion. On the basis of the findings and discussions of the current research, it can be concluded that leadership is one of the foremost factors on which the well being and efficiency of an organization rests. The important leadership traits are communication, which is the most important factor. Other than that, other factors such as problem solving, teamwork and collaboration, decision making, accountability and others are also important. This is always beneficial for the long term betterment of the concerned public healthcare organization and shall also add up to its sustainability, thereby, benefitting it in terms of competitiveness in the long run.
