S119 IND150 Colonising Australia: Affect on indigenous People Health Assessment 2 Answer
COLONIZING AFFECT ON INDIGENOUS PEOPLE HEALTH
Colonization can be considered as one of the major reason for growing cultural measures among the people of Australia. With identification of around 400 million indigenous people had been found to have a record of low-quality health. The problem of low-quality health is mainly caused due to environmental contamination, prevalent infections, poor hygiene, malnutrition, and poverty. Colonization has further changed the structure of the whole world by entering different cultural people in Australia for which the indigenous people are not provided with proper nutrition as well as healthcare benefits. While culture can be, refer to as the values, ideas, customs, and social behavior that several people from different regions obtain within themselves. The Europeans had entered into the country to conquer and settle which has put a negative impact on the local people with several policies and practices implemented by the government. The study sheds light on the negative impact of colonization, which had further affected the health of the indigenous people in Australia.
The sudden consequences of colonization were the involvement of several diseases that include measles, smallpox, and influenza. These diseases had spread over a huge part of the country that had affected various indigenous communities of Australia. The people infected by these diseases have also died due to the issues of poverty, lack of nutritious foods along with the transmission of trauma (Australianstogether.org.au, 2018). Impact of colonization in this regards can be seen more predominantly since it had increased the cultural conflicts among people. Improper opportunities and benefits that the local people had faced in their own hometown in previous generations had made the education level, healthcare facilities, and nutritional benefits weaker (Raphael, Swan, and Martinek, 1998).
Various colonies expanded by the British settlers had not only created the problem of a cultural barrier however they have established their colonies in Australia. Several places in which they have settled themselves in the lands of Tasmania, Brisbane, and Melbourne, which had created competition, based on land and resources (Sharing culture, 2015). It has rather resulted in violence and conflicts between the settlers and the indigenous people of the country. The people from different cultures had introduced violence into Australia by killing several mass of indigenous people. Colonization in Australia was mainly occurred due to several aspects including:
The main protecting aspects of an individual lie in the necessities that include safety, security, foods, and affection. These basic responsibilities were forcefully removed from the hands of the indigenous people. The governments of the country delivered their resources to the settlers came from different countries and does not inherit those necessities. Even the children were provided with a proper education system whereas the local people lack these opportunities from the government.
Broken relationships led the people to lose their opportunities for taking major responsibilities as a father, son or husband for the family (Ypinazar, Haswell-Elkins Melissa & Tsey, 2006). Furthermore, they lack their learning outcomes obtained from the elders to conduct an individual into an appropriate relationship, which can regulate meaningful connection among their family members.
The aboriginal people of Australia had lost their sense of identity because of their changing names and roles in society. This is due to the removal of these people to different homes and islands where they are forcefully being removed from their communities and families.
Several different religions had entered into the country because of variation in culture, whereas it has not changed the religion of the indigenous people. They did not change their ways of behaving and thinking due to colonization in Australia.
Generally, the mental health and illness of the indigenous people have resulted in several themes includes culture, spirituality, community kingships, family, social, economic, historical factors, loss along with fear and education. Colonization had mainly affected the health of the indigenous people based on modern lifestyles as well (Axelsson, Kukutai & Rebecca Kippen, 2016). The indigenous group that obtains modern lifestyles had acquired diseases includes cardiovascular disease, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and other mental disorders. Therefore, the illness that the people of the hometown facing due to colonization needs to increase the political commitment, awareness as well as government recognition instead of denial (Sherwood, 2013). Though the outsiders do not have, their hometowns for which they are provided with several opportunities, therefore, the indigenous people also requires proper training, encouragement and increase their power to overcome their challenges.
Other than diseases like chickenpox or measles, the indigenous girls and women had faced the problem of sexual exploitation and abuse that had introduced many vulnerable diseases in them. The indigenous people had disparities in their health in which several people suffered from infectious diseases, higher rates of suicides as well as high mortality rates in infants (Australianstogether.org.au, 2018). The health issues of these people need to be seen through the concept of socio-political context in which appropriation in land; ongoing colonialism as well as displacement are required. The people had also tried to raise their rights on their lands and resources, which were violated by the settlers and were killed because of colonial violence. They were not provided with appropriate health care systems for the diseases incurred by the problem of colonization in Australia. The condition of the physical environment were also put stress on the educational system of the children.
The colonization had a negative impact on the indigenous people of Australia by introducing several health issues. The different cultural people had been provided with the opportunities that are given by the government. These settlers further took the land and resources of the indigenous people. The variation in culture also includes various religious practices that are different from other cultures. The study focuses the problem of facing this culture barrier in a particular country or society and the use of universal language becomes one of the major factors in mitigating this problem in the society. Thus, colonization had raised the health problems of the people and even developed the cultural aspects of the country.
