Stage 3: Research Report
Introduction
Sustainability is the approach that is quite comprehensive when it comes to the management of the organisation. It is mainly focused on structuring, maximising and creating long-term social, economic and environmental value. It can be used as a response towards the challenges concerning the modern world that organisations are facing from both private and public sectors (Tiana & Villarreal, 2016). Universities also play an important part while creating effects on Business process management, as they tend to instil a sense of social responsibility in their students. Hence, sustainability is a form of responsibility concerning the impact that is created by organisations on their surroundings, environment, business and social terms. Proper management of this in packs can result in improved external relations, lower cost and better-managed risks. Journals were cross-referred so that proper information regarding the topic could be gathered.
Critical analysis of Social responsibility and sustainability on business process management at Edith Cowan University
The Edith Cowan University is committed to reducing the pressure on the environment as they have started to encourage sustainability (Environment ECU, 2020). The university tries to diminish the environmental footprint by encouraging the achievement of a community, which is sustainable, and by creating a learning environment. They bring a large organisation to create immense greenhouse gas emissions and the University acknowledges this significant contribution. The main goal of the university was to minimise their resources of waste and prevent pollution so that they can demonstrate environmentally sensitive development through continuous improvement and innovation. They focus on the targets related to their sustainable community’s action plan, which helps to develop awareness so that the practice of environment and social sustainability among students’ communities and employees could be carried on. Sustainability can also help to embed principles of environmental and social sustainability as skills and knowledge into the Research programmes and Curriculum. The improvement in the plan is continuous as they reduce the university's environmental footprints in dimensions of teaching, learning concerning energy, research, materials, waste, water, transport and biodiversity.
Moreover, sustainability also helps to raise issues concerning business process management and this will be useful to provide business processes, which will be systematic so that social, economic and environmental dimensions concerning sustainability go to be understood. There is a big link between education and corporate social responsibility (Amran, Lee & Devi, 2014). The onus lies on the universities to implant a sense of responsibility among dear students. Governments and businesses play vital roles in overcoming skill mismatches and skill gaps. However, they can be engaged with one another in proper ways. Business process management should transcend these matters so that an impeccable impact can be created on their employee's needs concerning the societal needs of the region. This way they can build regional collaborations with governments, non-profit organisations and educational institutions, which will be fruitful for issues like competitiveness and unemployment.
Nejati et al. (2011), stated that sustainability can help to create a notion of shared value and this perspective can be used as a management strategy and can bring about changes in the corporate financial performances. Businesses can also engage themselves in philanthropic causes, and principles of stewardship so that they can unleash these shared values for business process management towards society. The process management could hire philanthropy so that it complements their long-term sustainability and responsibility concerning a city. Hence one of the university's main strategic goal is to ensure they have sustainability in their organisation with proper infrastructure that can support the broader objectives (Ahmad, 2012). Thus, the university focuses on reducing its carbon footprint through various activities, which include landfilling with wastes, reducing energy and water consumption and so on. Moreover, government policy targets are kept in mind so that the goals of the university could be aligned with them.
Moreover, business process management could be used to promote sustainability. Sustainability is currently the driving force in society and consumer prefer their services and products, which are sustainable, and this has led universities and organisations to value the image of green business. These require an organisation to abide by regulations and rules and take permissions when they conduct anything concerning natural resources. Moreover, universities also help to realise that sustainable practices can bring financial benefits to the organisation. While designing, executing, implementing and managing the business processes the universities can traditionally focus on cost, time, quality drivers and efficiency only. As opined by Rundle-Thiele & Wymer, (2010), the emergence of sustainability made the classical driver is increasingly subjected to critical scrutiny. The approaches, which already exist in dimensions of business process management and sustainability mainly focuses on the environmental dimensions, which often overlooks economic and social dimensions. In the same manner, Edith Cowan University also becomes concerned with understanding, modelling, stimulating, documenting, executing, analysing and changing their business processes continuously so that they can dedicate them sells to overcome environmental consequences of the business processes.
It is important for the business practises to move towards sustainability so that they can research the stream concerning Green business process management. This will help the university to reduce and monitor the environmental impact of that business processes. Schoormann (2019), stated that the development could be done concerning the process patterns for acquiring social sustainability so that the social performance could be improved by compensating for negative aspects without altering the structure of the process. Moreover, the social alternative could also help in improving the performance socially by offering extra alternative processes so that there is no change in the core of the business processes. Social resource replacement also helps in improving social performance as the negative influences are replaced which are created on society and employees without changing the process structure (Camilleri, 2017). Labelling process, services and products concerning the social certificates of social sustainability also change the social image of the university.
The corporate social responsibility feel has been growing immensely and today a good number of approaches, theories and terminologies on CSR exist. The universities should imply organisational governance in the system so that the organisation can implement their objectives. Proper governance is based on incorporating the main practises and principles of transparency, accountability and it has a weird concerning the interest of stakeholders of the universities (Magdaleno, Duboc & Betz, 2016). The universities need to provide services and products to their students and that is why they have certain responsibilities towards their students. The concept of corporate Social responsibility has been evolved over the past few years. The focus has been Impolite on big corporations in the beginning and later they were evolved through different definitions and went beyond just large corporations to other organisations like small firms and educational institutions within such social responsibility.
Moreover, Edith Cowan University is one of the most efficient consumers of energy consumption in the Australian university sector. They stand in the fifth rank of the benchmarking report any combination of efficient buildings teamed with advanced BMS technologies adds them to drive this level of sustained performance. Moreover, they also focus on the reduction of plastic usage in their campuses. Plastic water bottles were removed from the vending machines from three campuses and they were replaced with biodegradable and glass cartoons. Up-gradation and installation of various, new water filters were installed on all campuses. ECU also provides students with options of transportation whereby carbon emotions can be reduced by pooling vehicles (Environment ECU, 2020). Moreover, the university explores the processes of visualisation approaches and tools, which already exist so that they can verify and amplify the sustainability lanes concerning business processes. For the university to achieve the process considering improvements in sustainability, it is fundamental that the higher base specialist can understand and examine the business processes models to create decisions. The visualisation process will allow observation knowledge instruction and fax. An initial Prototype type can also help the universities to visualise certain sustainable contexts (Ramos-Monge, Llinàs-Audet, & Barrena-Martínez, 2019). University’s potential comes from various perception concerning their labour by educating future professionals but higher education institutions can have an impact beyond that. The strategic decisions are impacted While various stakeholders through the educative, organisational, cognitive and social scope. The universities have a proper opportunity to generate welfare in the society thus Edith Cowan University uses strategic management constantly in the decision-making processes for corporate social responsibilities.
Conclusion
Finally, it can be summarised that Edith Cowan University uses its sustainable development plans for enhancing their business process management as well as looks after the welfare of their students. It can also be seen that educational programmes, which are still in students, can provide them with relevant skills and knowledge that are required by industry and businesses. Moreover, the government needs to work jointly with corporations and institutions so that they can improve student as well as employees and develop a sense of corporate sustainability within them. The study thus highlighted the importance of Social sustainability and corporate responsibility on business performance management of Universities.
